The first two of the following made it to the winners list of the 2013 Be Inspired Awards while the remainder found merit as finalists. 



Shibanee and Kamal Architects 

Bhau Institute of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Leadership

Pune, Maharashtra


The Bhau Institute of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Leadership on the campus of the College of Engineering in Pune, Maharashtra, India, was designed to nurture innovation, encourage entrepreneurship, and develop leadership. For this Rs 60 million project, Shibanee and Kamal Architects created a pleasingly unconventional design that visually melds with the institute’s status as a protected heritage structure. Because of the building’s circular shape surrounding an existing tamarind tree, it was a challenge for structural engineers to design and analyse the structure for expected loads and combinations yet still satisfy safety and serviceability standards. Bentley’s STAAD.Pro V8i met this need, enabling the realisation of what is described as an “architectural wonder” while also providing major cost benefits



Pall India Pvt. Ltd.

Jet-pulse Blowback Filtration System (Gas Solid Separation System-GSS)

Panipat, Haryana


Pall, a global leader in filtration and purification system technologies, designed the Jet-Pulse Blowback Filtration System for the Panipat Refinery in Haryana. The Rs 55 million project was fast-tracked, with all engineering deliverables such as general arrangement drawings, isometrics, and bill of materials to be completed within six weeks. Pall opted to use Bentley’s AutoPLANT Piping for the complex piping layout. As a result, piping deliverables were ready within two weeks of the start of modeling. AutoPLANT Equipment allowed designers to meet requirements for nonstandard, customized equipment and customized isometric symbols. Pall also saved time using AutoPLANT’s deliverables and built-in libraries. Overall, Bentley solutions reduced man-hours by nearly 70 percent.



L&T Construction Equipment Ltd.

Tata Consultancy Services Customer Care Center

Chennai, Tamil Nadu


For this Rs 1.2 billion project, L&T Construction designed a customer care center for Tata Consultancy Services. The 4,000-square-meter building is 10.4 meters high, not counting the distinctive steel butterfly roof that boasts an innovative design that promises to brand it not only as a Chennai landmark, but also as an iconic structure for India.  The butterfly structure over the terrace was fabricated using structural steel tubes with architectural envelope on top and exposed steel at bottom. Using Bentley’s STAAD.Pro, the firm’s design team rapidly produced variations of the building; studied member forces, member stress, reactions, and deflections; and analyzed load combinations for the member design. Using Bentley software to optimise the structural model, the project team saved time and projected construction costs.




Taikisha Engineering India Limited

Car Manufacturing Plant

Gurgaon, Haryana


Taikisha Engineering India is an Indo-Japanese engineering company that manufactures and exports automobile paint shops, automotive painting plants, automated spray system electro deposition systems, relay panels, power control centers, and diesel generator synchronization panels. For this Rs 15 billion project, the firm provided a turnkey system for an automobile manufacturer. Designing in a 3D environment for the first time, Taikisha Engineering India used Bentley’s STAAD.Pro, ProSteel, and MicroStation to optimize design data, reduce man hours by 50 percent and save over Rs 5.6 million in material costs. By eliminating duplication of work and automating processes, the firm completed the project in just two months instead of the usual six months; an 80 percent time savings that dramatically improved the profit margin.



L&T Construction Equipment Ltd.

Hyderabad Metro Rail Project

Hyderabad, Andra Pradesh


The Rs 164 billion Hyderabad Metro Rail project is a public-private partnership project which will  provide modern transport across three corridors in the southern city covering a total distance of 72 kilometers. L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited is implementing the project on a design-build-finance-operate-transfer basis. Each of the three lines will have a centralised metro rail train depot. The trains will run on a Communication Based Train Control system, which includes driverless technology to enhance safety and increase the frequency of trains. Given the densely populated metropolitan area, L&T Construction will be constructing an elevated metro rail viaduct over 80 road junctions. Bentley’s Power Rail Track has enabled the designers to complete an alignment design in a short time despite the multifaceted constraints.



Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Co. Ltd.

Integration of Urban Infrastructure through utility tunnel

Ahmedabad, Gujarat


GIFT City, the emerging financial hub in Gujarat, India, is generating 92 million square feet of development over 886 acres. Gujarat International Finance Tec-City placed all utilities in a tunnel accessible to material handling and maintenance vehicles. At 15,000-by-7.6-by-6.2 meters, the tunnel will carry 50 million liters per day of treated water, 200,000 tons of cooling water, 750 megawatts of power supply, and 280 million tons of solid waste. Aligned as sidewalks along road carriageways, the Rs 3.15 billion tunnel crossed beneath dozens of junctions with roads, utility plants, and drainage and sewerage. Bentley MXROAD was used to prepare a tunnel section template, which automatically provided the transition in alignment when the section changed. STAAD.Pro was used for 3D structural analysis. These products saved 1,500 man-hours and Rs 900 million.


iSAT Networks Engineers Pvt. Ltd.

132 Kilovolt Substation

Dehradun, Uttarakhand


Power Transmission Corporation of Uttarakhand retained iSAT Networks Engineers as the EPC contractor for a 132-kilovolt distribution substation in Dehradun. The Rs 114.4 million project had a total capacity of 80 million volt-amperes. iSAT used STAAD.Pro for substation structural analysis and Bentley Substation to create intelligent 3D physical layouts. Integrated Structural Modeling facilitated an integrated workflow between Bentley tools, enabling the reuse of structural models in 3D physical layouts. To ensure that electrical equipment was properly supported by steel structures and their foundations, analysis and design was carried out in STAAD.Pro, which also took seismic loads into account for the sub-critical seismic zone. The 3D layouts made clash detection and clearance checking easier, speeding plan submission and approval. This reduced the number of revisions before final plans by 60 percent. iSAT saved 20 man-days on design.
