Interview- Amarnath Ramachandran (LeeBoy India)

Bullish on opportunities we have a dedicated strategy to expand business

The Bengaluru-based Leeboy India Construction Equipment Pvt Ltd, the subsidiary of the 50-year old US major who designs and manufactures construction equipment for the infrastructure, road construction and maintenance industry, has had an excellent outing at Excon 2015, receiving a very good response in terms of visitor footfalls, generation of quality enquiries and even equipment sales. AMARNATH RAMACHANDRAN, PRESIDENT, spoke to SHRIKANT RAO about his company’s performance at the trade show, and the aftermath.

On Excon as a vehicle for business:  Within the first day of the exhibition we sold around 15 of our equipment. For the first time in three years, we saw customers asking for an expedited delivery of machines. This is really indicating a positive sign of growth in the market. Apart from these, we have had business visits from government bodies like PSUs from defense, local governing bodies and also major EPC contracting companies. A positive change that was observed during the show was an increase in customer awareness –they were more quality and technically conscious. This is a positive trend indicating the market has become more aware and mature. Exhibitions like Excon have been a vibrant platform in bringing different stakeholders under a common roof. The show in itself has now become big in terms of size, number of participants and visitors both local and international.

On the products launched at Excon 2015: LeeBoy displayed two motor graders – the 785xl (13.5t) and the 985 (15 t), two backhoe loaders – 699 (99hp) and 679 (80hp), the 523 excavator (24.2 t), concrete batching plant  (60 cu.m), concrete curb laying machine and the pothole patcher. All of these are state-of-the-art machines intended for the road construction and maintenance sector focused on productivity, fuel efficiency, ergonomic comfort and safety at a reasonable price.

On the market outlook and key demand drivers: We have been delivering machines to a wide range of sectors of which roads, railways and mega infrastructure projects like dedicated freight corridors have been a major source of demand pull. We are also seeing increasing opportunities from the EPC projects which are now opening up. Some of the large players like Punj Lloyd are now coming back to the sector. We are hence very bullish about the opportunities from India and are working on a dedicated strategy to expand our business in the road construction equipment segment. Equipment leasing is another key area in demand today.

On the opportunities from government owned companies: A growing urgency is been seen currently in regards to the timely execution of projects, for which the demand for hi-end technologies are on a constant rise. PSUs and governing bodies are today becoming more aware and conscious in addressing the fall back areas which hindered the growth so far. Discussions are already being made with industry bodies like ICEMA to rectify such fallacies in terms of equipment usage, operator training, comfort standards and availability and usage of leasing equipment. However, we see enormous opportunities from PSUs as many mega infrastructure projects are being initiated and fast tracked now. We see a revival in the mining sector, especially the coal segment. Considering the evolving opportunities, we are coming up with two products fully dedicated to mining operations.

On the advantages achieved through participation: Excon has been a profitable platform for us to showcase new products. LeeBoy is always looking to make new innovations in terms of products and technology. A few Excon editions from now, we will be crossing the Tier-IV barrier. A sea of change is also expected in emission norms which will, by implications, lead to changes in construction equipment. We as a company are largely focused on mechatronics and consider this as a need of the hour. Our backhoe loaders, pothole patchers and curb casting machines were few of the key attractions displayed at our stall in Excon. We see a huge demand for such machines in India, for instance our curb casting machine can build drains in a day and the pothole patchers are equipped with a revolutionary 60 second patching system
