We are capable of meeting any market dynamics

Founded in 1964, Mumbai based Tiki Tar Industries India Ltd, is today a prominent name in the bitumen industry. With an industrial presence in over 9 cities, the company covers all of the key bitumen markets, from emerging to mature. HARDIK SHAH and PRATIK SHAH, DIRECTORS, TIKI TAR INDUSTRIES INDIA, in an interaction with VEENA KURUP spoke about the company’s expertise in offering unique products and on the company's plan to grab new opportunities.

Briefly tell us about your company’s role in the development of products which are in use for sustainable construction activities?

Tiki Tar Industries India is today counted among the leaders in bitumen manufacturing. We are an end-to-end product supplier for any kind of road infrastructure project. Tiki Tar as a company is committed to maintain its core values of sustainability, quality and leadership in all its operations. The company's leadership position in the bitumen industry is the result of a consistent management strategy that focuses on product diversity, geographic reach and vertical integration - both into raw material production designed to minimise risk caused by economic cycles and downstream distribution for providing value-added and customised bitumen solutions through further processing to meet specific customer requirements. Our customers are the heart of our business. We collaborate closely with them to ensure that we evolve and develop our products in line with the market dynamism. Today, we offer a wide range of advanced and specialised purposes like rubber and polymer modified bitumen, micro-surfacing emulsions, and even niche products to meet requirements like pothole repairs, and maintenance and repaving of existing and old road projects. We have also successfully established our presence in neighbouring countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

What are the key selling points of your products which help you to bag contracts from construction project contractors and developers?

The three key selling points or USPs which gives our products an edge in the market are our experience, and ability to offer specialised products as per customer requirements, and the widespread presence of our manufacturing plants across India. We have been involved in the bitumen manufacturing industry for the past five decades. This experience helps us to understanding and prepare according to the market dynamics. Our other key advantage is that we deliver products and meet customer requirements within a short span of time. This ability is achieved through our multiple manufacturing plants located across the country. We have our manufacturing units located in the southern, eastern, central and western parts of India. The close proximity of manufacturing units to the desired project location enables us mostly to meet customer requirements within a short time span. Road surfaces have to bear heavy freight and passenger load capacities. Construction materials must ensure elasticity and durability of structures, hence are of vital importance for such projects. Our products like rubber and polymer modified bitumen offer such qualities to the contractors in construction or developing sustainable road networks. All these abilities have repeatedly enabled us to gain orders and win customer trust.

Citing a few project examples, briefly tell us of the benefits accrued to road contractors through use of polymer and rubber modified bitumen as compared to conventional bitumen?

We were the official suppliers for prestigious projects like the F1 race track in Noida, which is the country’s first. Apart from this our products were used in the construction of the finest road networks in India like Mumbai-Nasik, Vadodara-Ahmedabad, Mumbai-Surat, Freeway Road Project in Mumbai, Chembur-Santacruz Link Road etc. Apart from this, we have also supplied to numerous airport projects like the Hyderabad airport, the T3 airport terminal in New Delhi etc. Our polymer and rubber based modified binder is useful for the construction of roads catering to heavy traffic and also for the formation of airfields and surfacing. The product in addition is also used as a binder for stress absorbing membrane (SAM) and stress absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI) for sealing of cracks, preventive maintenance of flexible pavement and delaying reflective cracking. Modified bitumen performs better than ordinary bitumen especially in high rainfall area and in a situation where the aggregates are prone to stripping. We also offer Bitumen with anti stripping properties. The other key advantage offered through the specialised products like polymer and rubber modified bitumen is the enhanced elasticity in materials. Our Tiki CRMB product is a blend of selected grades of bitumen and crumb rubber modifier. The modifier restores the required visco-elastic balance of the bitumen binder, which improves binder resistance to any form of permanent deformation while maintaining high resistance to fatigue, thermal and low temperature cracking. Using TIKI CRMB/PMB, the maintenance free life of pavement will increase one and half to two times as compared to roads built using unmodified neat bitumen binders. Furthermore, TIKI CRMB/PMB has good adhesion to different types of aggregates which reduce rutting, cracking or deformation. Elasticity, moisture absorption, load bearing abilities and suitability to diverse climatic condition are the key benefits offered by our products. They have successfully ensured the successful development and maintenance of sustainable road networks by contractors.

What is the lifecycle guaranteed for the structures, especially road projects, which largely utilise Tiki Tar products?

Road construction process involves the usage of multiple building materials and bonding agents. Bitumen comprises only 5 per cent of the total road construction process. Once the building materials are effectively used, the polymer or rubber based bitumen can enhance the project’s total lifespan by two times more than the ordinary structures. This is one of the prime reasons why most of the BOT contractors prefer modified bitumen materials as against conventional ones. The products by ensuring crack-free structures require minimal maintenance and cost on repairs.

Apart from highways or mega infrastructure and construction projects, how suitable are the products like rubber and polymer modified bitumen in constructing roads at interior locations?

The products are currently expensive owing to its unique qualities. While the product is suitable for mega infrastructure projects it can also meet the requirements of projects located in different geographies. The products’ awareness and utilisation is gradually picking up in tier-II cities. We expect the tier-III market to scale up similarly in the future.

Tell us about your ongoing projects and those in the pipeline?

We have been associated with numerous highway and road construction projects across the country. Some of our our recent initiatives include the widening of Vadodara-Ahmedabad and Pune-Satara road networks. We are also supplying for the Thumkur -Chitradurg road link project.

Tell us of the acceptance and utilisation of such products by India’s public and private sector companies? Could you name a few of your clients from the infrastructure and construction sectors?

Polymer and rubber modified bitumen materials are today increasingly gaining popularity in the construction domain. The product solutions are being whole heartedly accepted by both public and private bodies. Certain public sector bodies like MMRDA, Surat Municipal Corporation and Thane Municipal Corporation have successfully used these products in their numerous projects. However, the acceptance and usage is seen in a more mature way among private organisations. However, we see the trend rapidly picking up in the construction sector, especially among contractors and developers involved in road projects.

We are very closely associated with numerous infrastructure and construction companies in India. L&T, Sadbhav Engineering, HCC, NCC, IRB Infrastructure, Afcons and Reliance are a few of our key clients.

Briefly tell us about your manufacturing units?

We have in total seven manufacturing plants in India, of which two plants are located in Mumbai, and one each at Baroda, Jamnagar, Indore, Vishakhapatnam and Mangalore. Location wise, we have been catering to the western, southern, central and eastern regions of the country. Presently, we have a total production capacity of 100,000 tons per year though our plants have a capacity of more than 250,000 tons a year. The production capacity is limited due to the unstable market conditions. We aim to expand our capacities with the increase in demand and introduction of new projects. All our plants are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and machinery which run 24 hours irrespective of the climatic conditions. All our machines are either German or Italian manufactured and involve minimal human interference. We also focus to maintain a uniform standard in all our products being manufactured at distinct plants.

What is the company’s approach and investment towards R&D, innovation and on maintaining environment sustainability?

Research and development lies at the heart of Tiki Tar's strategy to lead innovation in the world of bitumen. We employ highly experienced researchers around India while developing next generation bitumen and solutions that transform the range of options open to our customers. We presently have two R&D centres, each located at Mumbai and Vadodara. Both the centres are well-equipped with hi-tech machinery for testing with NABL approvals. Apart from these, as part of our R&D research activities we also initiate numerous technical data to analyse market requirements. All our equipment and technologies are updated on a year-on-year basis. 4-5 per cent of our total budget is annually invested for our R&D activities. Apart from R&D, maintaining an environment friendly operational approach is our other core agenda. All our factories abide by environmental norms and utilise eco-friendly technologies. Though the manufacturing of bitumen involves a smoke generation, we have tried to minimise the emission by adopting changes in the fuel usages. Instead of the traditional wood fire method to heat bitumen we use less smoke emitting fuels like biomass etc in the production process. Furthermore, crumbed rubber is one of the basic raw materials used in our production process for rubber based bitumen materials. This addresses effective usage and recycling of waste tires, which is a growing concern in India.

Very briefly could you tell us about your expertise in the waterproofing segment?

Since leakage and seepage in the buildings and cement structures are a perennial problem which cannot be stopped with the conventional method of waterproofing prevalent in India, the company introduced APP/SBS modified bituminous waterproofing membrane with non-woven polyester and fiber-glass reinforcement. Both these materials are being used in highly developed countries and ensure long lasting relief from water leakage for many years. Waterproofing has become a major concern in India due to the unevenness in the monsoons. This opened for us a huge scope of business in this sector. Our waterproofing solutions are developed through a joint venture initiative with Danosa, a Spanish company. Danosa has 50 years experience in the waterproofing business. We have so far successfully supplied our product to numerous prestigious residential projects, IT parks, and even airports in India. Few of our key landmark projects under this segment are the T2 airport terminal project in Mumbai, World One, the world’s tallest residential building, and IT parks for companies like Infosys, and numerous educational institutions. The products are manufactured at our plant in Vadodara, which is the largest manufacturing facility of India.

Tell us about the company’s plan of action for 2015? What are the new additions planned in your product line?

The government’s proactive infrastructural approach and the leadership of a dynamic minister like Nitin Gadkari opens a positive growth path for the nation. We are capable of meeting any market dynamics and expect the demand to soon pick up with increasing project requirements. All our expansion plans are in line with demand requirements. We will be particularly focusing on developing our micro-surfacing emulsion solutions as the need of the hour is to meet project requirements on time. We also have plans to expand our production capacities and add more products to our portfolio.
