A much awaited flyover project aiming to de-congest traffic flow to the Kolkata airport has benefited from CHRYSO India’s concreting solution. 


Commuting to Kolkata airport from Ultadanga area is soon expected to be a smooth ride. The concern will be addressed through the ongoing 2 km long flyover project from Kestopur to Baguiatias Joramandir on VIP Road. Construction firm Larsen & Toubro has been roped in for the project, which is being implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme. The state’s Public Works Department is the nodal agency for the project. A total cost of about Rs216 crore has been pegged for executing the project, of which 35 per cent is managed by the Central government. When complete the flyover project will ease traffic chaos on the VIP road to the airport from Ultadanga. The area is at present facing heavy traffic congestion at the Lake Town, Kestopur and Baguiati crossings of the VIP Road.


Key Challenges

The project while expected to de-congest the traffic to and from Kolkata airport has faced numerous issues during its execution.  The key hurdles faced during the project construction were:


  • The need for RMX concrete due to non-availability of space at the project site for installation of batching plants
  • De-shuttering within 36 hours
  • Congested reinforcement
  • Limited time period due to open traffic

The project hence needed a concrete admixture which could offer great flexibility, increased workability retention and application in wide of concrete by ensuring desired liquidity.
