Interaction-Hemant Mohindra, MD, ROSSI Gearmotors

World over, Rossi is known for its heavy duty drives for tough applications like mining and construction equipment

Backed by more than six decades of experience, Rossi started its Indian journey nearly 10 years ago and strengthened its foothold purely with its technical prowess. In an exclusive interview to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES, HEMANT MOHINDRA, MD, ROSSI GEARMOTORS (INDIA) PVT. LTD, spoke about the company’s technical fortes, customization of products and a lot more.

Experts have called Industry 4.0 the next Industrial Revolution. How will Industry 4.0 bring in a revolution for the construction equipment manufacturing sector?

I think 4.0 era is on the brink of start in India with volumes and scale of business going up. Following changes will come in the businesses and machines:

  • The machines will be getting smaller in size without reduction in the performance
Increased use of electronics and micro electronics in the machines will help in the live performance monitoring thereby bringing down the operational cost and improvement in the output.
  • Apart from this, remote sensing of the machines would become possible and that would help in capturing real time data of all machines and factories thus making them smarter
  • Live condition monitoring of the machines already happens to some extent but this is going to improve drastically due to multiplication of internet speeds
  • Cyber systems will decentralize the decision-taking and this would improve service response time to the customers.
  • Rossi is ready for the 4.0 era as our products have all types of sensor capabilities.

In the recent years, IoT has had a vast impact on the manufacturing sector? How do you look at the impact of IoT for the construction equipment sector?

  • IoT (Internet of Things) is changing everything in the world. The way of doing business is changing and there is no one who wouldn’t be impacted by IoT
  • With 5G in the pipeline, IoT will further pick up pace and everything in the daily personal and work life would change
  • In construction industry also, companies have started working with IoT to monitor and resolve issues on the construction sites
  • IoT would help save lot of running cost to the companies. The companies are using more and more sensors on the sites to collect real time data and then use that data to save cost thereby, improve productivity and site safety.
  • Construction equipment Companies have already started deploying IoT in their machines to monitor and control the machine operation like digging depth, slope setting, surface preparation, tonnage produced, machine breakdown, machine automation for safety and other real time operation data. This, in fact, is an era of revolution where the cost could be reduced and efficiency safety would be enhanced through the use of Internet

Detail us on the range of components for the construction equipment offered by your company, in terms of types, capacities, and applications.

  • World over, Rossi is known for its heavy duty drives for tough applications like mining and construction equipment. Rossi has complete product offering between 50 Nm to 3,000,000 Nm torque for the industry. This includes Helical and Planetary drives. In construction and mining industry, main applications that we cater to are Conveyor drives, Thickners for Mining, Travel drives, bucket elevators, Slew drives etc.

Are you planning to launch any new products or variants to your existing product portfolio?

  • Our product portfolio is very broad and still we keep on adding products to our offerings.
  • After synchronized gear units for mixers, we have launched products for Marin and Offshore applications. We already have the desired certifications for this market.
  • We have launched planetary gear drives with extended bearing support especially for Thickner and Slew applications in the Construction, Mining and Material handling equipment.
  • Now we also offer parking Brakes in the planetary drive units.
  • We also enhanced our monoblock G Helical series by 2 sizes to reach a torque rating of 100,000 Nm

What distinguishes your products vis-a-vis the competition? Cutting edge Smart Technology

  • The power to weight ratio of Rossi products is typically 20-40% higher than the competitor products, especially in the Helical units. This makes the unit fitment and maintenance much easier. This has become possible through use of high grade materials inside our products.
  • Rossi Gear units accept mostly IEC motors without the use of additional adapters. This is very user friendly in case of motor replacement needs as IEC motors are widely available in the market. Also this makes the cost of ownership lesser for the customers
  • Hollow shafts are made out of tubes rather than the bars thereby making the shaft quality more consistent.
  • Mechanical efficiency of helical units is at par with European standards. However Rossi worm units are much more efficient thereby, bringing down the consumed power requirements.
  • Through our superior technical knowhow, we support the customers to cut their electricity bills by use of optimized gear drives.
  • Rossi offers upto 3 years warranty on its all the products which is not the industry norm.

Detail us on your aftermarket services as a strategic differentiator

  • Rossi doesn’t consider after market as a major revenue stream but focuses on providing quality service to its customers. Rather than after market, we focus more on the pre sales support as this leads to correct product selection for the application and thereby reducing downtime. Rossi’s warranty cost is less than 0.5% and this shows the presence of strong technical knowhow of Rossi.

Tell us about your Manufacturing Base in India.

  • Rossi just completed the expansion of its Indian facility in Coimbatore and doubled the capacity. We have qualified team in Coimbatore that is backed up by quality products and equipment. We have 40000 sq ft assembly plant plus another approx 40000 open area. We assemble products upto 125,000 Nm in India.

Do you practice ‘Make in India and Sell Globally,’ use your India manufacturing base to supply the global market.

  • Rossi has assembly facility in India from where we do assembly and could sell also to our global locations. We are accelerated the localization to become competitive thereby following the initiative of Make in India. However we do not sell beyond the neighboring countries at present.
  • Your outlook for the components market and from your company perspective
  • Indian market is poised to grow in the long run despite currently having a short term slowdown situation. The economy is robust and the business confidence has been high in 2019. We need to wait and watch the current situation without pressing the panic button.
  • Make in India push is giving the boost to India for increasing the local content and thereby making Indian companies more competent to meet global standards at lower cost. The increasing volumes would certainly help in bringing down the product cost.
  • Rossi is also participating in Make in India initiative by localizing around 25-30% of the total components. This is helping us to grow at the rate of 25% CAGR in last 5 years.

As an exhibitor, what are your expectations at EXCON ’19?

  • EXCON has always provided us with the opportunity to directly contact customers at one location. Apart from this, its great place to showcase the new products. I think participating in EXCON is essential for the companies to grow their brand name. No other platform is bigger than EXCON in Construction segment.
