Experts have called Industry 4.0 the next Industrial Revolution. How will Industry 4.0 bring in a revolution for the construction equipment manufacturing sector? Tell us about its scope and extent of its implementation in your manufacturing facility.

The rise of informed customers and innovative technologies has made the manufacturing industry reshape the overall operations of the organisation. The integration of production techniques with the latest technological developments has the potential to make infrastructure development more efficient. Robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, telematics and artificial intelligence are a few digital solutions disrupting the space.

Big-ticket infrastructure development projects not only demand the best quality output but also work on tight timelines thus, creating a need for specialised, intelligent and technologically advanced construction equipment. The rapid adoption of digital technologies such as the ‘Internet of Things’, ‘Big Data’, and machine learning, has been ushering a new era of innovation in the Indian construction landscape today. JCB has pioneered in this area with the introduction of JCB LiveLink, an advanced telematics technology. Such integration is not only enhancing operational efficiency but also providing important data that can be examined after handover to become a part of operational management.

JCB’s LiveLink technology in machines, benefits the customers in better fleet management – by enabling customers remotely monitor and manage their machines. This information makes a huge difference in the efficiency and costs of the entire operation. Over 1,25,000 LiveLink enabled machines are working across the country. The JCB LiveLink technology has been a game-changer in the Earthmoving and Construction Equipment industry. Users, Dealers and JCB get SMS alerts on their phones regarding the Service, Operations and Security of their machine.

To monitor these machines in real-time, JCB has set up a world-class command centre at its Ballabgarh facility. JCB dealerships have also set up a similar LiveLink command centre to ensure that the real-time support is provided to the customers.

Though sustained efforts towards innovation and R&D are being made in the ECE industry towards industry 4.0, however there is still a long way to go. As we continue to evolve to cater to current market trends and demands, the vision towards industry 4.0 looks promising.

In the recent years, IoT has had a vast impact on the manufacturing sector? How do you look at the impact of IoT for the construction equipment sector?

Digital technologies such as ‘Internet of Things’ and ‘Big Data’ have ushered in a new era of innovation in the Indian business landscape and today, they touch our lives in more ways that we can imagine. From booking a cab to booking hotels to ordering food is now possible with just few clicks on our smart devices.

The Indian Construction Equipment industry is also fully embracing this convergence of digital and traditional technologies with JCB India, a leading manufacturer of Earthmoving and Construction Equipment pioneering the way. JCB India’s commitment towards this digital innovation is demonstrated through advanced telematics technology, LiveLink. Through this state-of-the-art technology, JCB has radically changed and improved the customer experience with its machines. LiveLink benefits the customers in better fleet management – by enabling customers remotely monitor and manage their machines, which leads to better expense management and timely completion of work. LiveLink also provides an opportunity to customers to maximise their returns on investment through better management of their assets.

The Geo fencing and Time fencing features also give out SMS alerts whenever the machine moves out of the designated, pre-determined geographical areas or works outside the pre designated time limits. The machine through the hardware and the mobile network will give out an alert when operated beyond the designated timings or the geo fenced areas. These features are useful where machines are prone to theft and misuse. There are various instances where JCB machines which were stolen have also been recovered as they appeared on the monitoring system the moment they were switched on.

Moreover, with the advent of digital technologies, users can now control their entire fleet in real time and all the critical machine information is available on their smart devices in the form of digital applications such as JCB LiveLink app, JCB Smart Serve App and Smart Machine Diagnostics app.
