Briefly give us an overview of the Crushing & Screening equipment industry in India. What are the types of Crushing & Screening equipment currently most in demand?  What are the cost/quality equations and growth prospects?

India’s crushing and screening industry has seen a steady growth over the last few years and two important factors driving this growth are: increased government spending on infrastructure and a surge in road sector and cement capacity expansion projects. With the recent Budget 2019’s massive push towards infrastructure development, we expect to have a double-digit growth this fiscal for almost all types of crushing and screening equipment, the most popular ones being: high capacity mobile crushers.

The roads and highway sector continues to be an important growth driver for the CE industry and is one of the main reasons for customers to move towards mobility. Our tracked plants are best suited to meet the requirements of these customers, especially when they have to complete large projects in a relatively shorter period of time. We have seen this trend for the last few years and it is one of the prime reasons for the growth of our tracked crushers and screeners in the Indian market.

Details us about your offerings in the CSE sector, their types and capacities.

Terex is continuously incorporating new innovations and the latest technologies across all domains of our crushing, screening, washing and material handling equipment. We are one of the first companies to manufacture mobile plants in India and we provide customers with products that best suit their needs at the right price. Terex is the leader in tracked mobile crushing and screening equipment and enjoys a healthy market share. We are now seeing this mobile market expand, with customers moving towards mobility as project durations get shorter and they realize the benefits of the quick start up times of plants of this nature. We are also seeing more and more manufacturers now bringing mobile plants to India, which would also further increase the market size.

Detail us about the cutting edge technology in your machines Your USP’s vis-à-vis competition.

Terex has an intense focus on improving our existing equipment, developing innovative new equipment and producing best-in-class technology to enhance our equipment’s efficiency. As well as having one of the most comprehensive portfolios for crushing and screening equipment, we also provide a one-stop solution for sand manufacturing needs, with equipment that is proven for handling the toughest applications, even when operating in extreme conditions. An example is the Terex Autosand® cones, which have established themselves as efficient and reliable machines to produce manufactured sand.

This is due to its low power consumption and low ultrafine generation on per-ton basis, thus reducing sand washing and slurry management costs. This machine has a large feed intake, capable up to 63mm, and a higher production capacity compared to the conventional tertiary machines. The longer parallel crushing zone in the Autosand® cone results in higher reduction and better-shaped aggregate.

Terex has supplied over 100 Autosand® machines across India for meeting ever-growing sand requirements, including M/s Shivalaya Construction Co at Charkhi  Dadri, Haryana, and as one of the biggest installations in country for quality sand production, can produce 300 ton per hour of high quality sand. Salient feature of this plant is the use of only Autosand® machines to produce sand (contrary to traditional use of impactors to produce sand), thus making it highly efficient with minimum wastage.

Detail us on your company’s emphasis on Research, Design and innovation in your Crushing and Screening equipment.

As a company, we understand the importance of R&D in overall growth, to offer differentiated value to our customers and maintain our position as industry leader, therefore we have accordingly committed our resources in this area. We have a large team of design engineers based at our Hosur factory and also in our Global R&D Centre in Bangalore, who are constantly working on new models suited for the Indian conditions and as per the local requirements.

As well as our team based locally in India, Terex is a global corporation, and thus we can leverage engineering capabilities and expertise across the world through collaboration and cross-team learning.

With the increasing demand for the equipment, what are the steps that you have taken or, are planning to in order to increase the productivity?

The crushing and screening industry is growing at a rapid pace and demand for our equipment is at an all-time high. We are undergoing significant investment at our Hosur facility including facility improvements and expansion of buildings, which will allow for additional space in the main build area for production ramp up and improved efficiency.

Terex India also works closely with our customers to ensure availability of skilled manpower who are adept at operating our equipment in a safe and efficient manner that will increase productivity and return on investment for our customers. We have also set up a new Training Centre up at our Hosur facility to provide advanced training to crusher operators and plant supervisors. This is accredited as a training partner of the Infrastructure Equipment Skill Council (IESC), under Skill India and NSDC program of Government of India.

Your strategy to play in a price sensitive market.

India may be a price-sensitive market, but this is not the sole driver. We have been in the market for nearly two decades now and have found that customers do not look at price alone when investing in new equipment. Our strategy is to offer our customers equipment that provides value for money in terms of reliability, efficiency, continuing support, availability of spare parts and re-sale prices.

Aftermarket services as a strategic differentiator.

What differentiates Terex India from our competitors is our huge investment in aftermarket support. Terex India realises that our crushing and screening equipment represents a large capital investment for our customers, and maximising uptime and return on investment is therefore critical. We have invested heavily in the area of service and parts support and are proud to have the highest number of parts warehouses in the country.

The Hosur facility has recently opened a brand-new, Integrated Aftermarket Facility that has doubled the parts warehouse area for Terex India. The state-of-the-art facility, with an upgraded logistics system that deals with all picking, packing, delivery functions and storage, plays a key role in driving the reliable, efficient supply of parts to Terex India customers. The building also encompasses an office block, dedicated Refurbishment Shop, Engine Repair Facility as well as a new rock test lab to aid in the prediction of performance. Terex India has also expanded its Customer and Product Support Team to improve geographic reach and increase capacity of technical support provision across India.

We lay a lot of emphasis on training and every year, Terex India provides operator training to hundreds of participants, with almost 600 trained across in 2018. The training is designed to support the operators using Terex equipment and educate them on safe and correct practices of machine operation as well as the importance of scheduled plant maintenance. At the end of the training, operators undergo a test before they are given a certificate.

Finally, we run multiple Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMCs) for our customers. The benefit of these is that customers have the peace of mind with their running costs frozen. It also supports better plant maintenance and longer economic life of the plant.

Customers are aware that Terex is best placed to support the tracked machines under AMC due to its vast experience in tracked plants and the availability of parts and service team across the country. The large presence of our service engineers across the country has made a lot of difference to our customers who firmly believe that we are always going to provide timely and superior quality service.

Rentals is another area that has seen a considerable demand. Your take on the present status of the rentals market?

Unlike the markets in Europe or USA, the rental equipment market for Crushing & Screening of India is still in its nascent stage and it appears that it is going to take some more time to catch up with rest of the world.

Which types of new CSE have you launched or are planning to launch in the near future? Also, which geographical markets are you tapping for the same?

We are currently working on various new product development projects for the Indian and regional markets. There are multiple new models planned to be launched for our modular range and also some exciting new additions for the tracked crushers and conveying range.

We are particularly excited about the upcoming launch of our new TG Cone Series, a Bronze Bushing Spider Bearing Cone. This new series of cones will complement our current market leading Cedarapids MVPX Series (Screw Type Cone) and the TC Series (Floating Bowl Cone) which will give us the opportunity to offer the most versatile and comprehensive cone range in the industry.

What according to you are the major demand/growth drivers for CSE and what steps would you like the government to take which will propel growth.

There is a need for the Road Construction Industry to stand up and courageously transform the road building process through innovative engineering approach and equipment. More than 70% of contractors are still not prepared to adopt technology for faster execution of projects. To ensure time bound completion of infrastructure projects, we have proven and robust machines that are actually giving upper edge to our existing customers.

Future outlook for the  Crushing & Screening Equipment industry and from a company perspective

We are one of the market leaders in crushing, screening and washing solutions in India. We have a rich history of solid market presence for the last 20 years and we further cemented our position in India with the local manufacturing unit at Hosur established in 2009. We are particularly proud to be the market leader in tracked crushing and screening equipment in India and in the wheeled and modular crushing and screening equipment.

The dwindling supply of sand as a construction resource has been well documented in the media for many years. As a result, manufactured sand - where the sand is derived from crushed rock fine - is proving to be sustainable and viable alternative for construction needs. Taking India as an example, historically most sand was dredged from rivers but in recent times, a government crack-down on the practice has led to a boom in manufactured sands. Due to numerous infrastructure projects like the Bharatmala, Sagarmala, railway and airport expansion, demand for superior quality manufactured sand is anticipated to rise exponentially. We are therefore excited about the opportunity for growth across solutions for sand manufacturing needs.
