Today it is technology that drives the machines

JCB India has transformed into a full range infrastructure equipment partner with over 60 world class products in eight product categories. Over the years, the company has made significant investments to ensure their customers get technologically advanced and innovative products.  JASMEET SINGH, ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT, CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS & CORPORATE RELATIONS, JCB INDIA LTD, in an exclusive interview with CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES, shares about his company’s excavator offerings, growth drivers, cutting edge technology and more.

The new government has recently tabled the budget. How do you look at the budget and the opportunities ahead?

The budget this year is a vision document with respect to India becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2024. As infrastructure is the central theme to the budget, we are looking at it in positive light. The focus on solving the NBFC (Non-Banking Financial Companies) crisis, monetising the banks is one of the key highlights. There is focus on developing rural infrastructure which is very welcome. However, the current situation needs to be energised.Rural sector will be a key growth driver in the future. The Construction Equipment industry will benefit from that. Another most important sector is ‘Water to all’. The ‘Har Ghar Jal’ program is aimed at providing water to all the households. So, for us, there are substantial opportunities and they will continue to be there as India needs a lot of infrastructure in the years to come.

Tell us about the range of Excavators offered by you, in terms of types, capacities and applications.

JCB India has transformed into a full range infrastructure equipment partner with over 60 world class products in eight product categories. Over the years, we have made significant investments to ensure our customers get technologically advanced and innovative products. In the Excavator segment, we presently offer a comprehensive range of Excavators, starting from 3T Mini Excavator to 38T Tracked Excavator, to cater to different applications.

In terms of performance, the 3T Mini Excavator is a power packed machine that takes productivity to new heights. The machine performs in a variety of applications that demand high tractive effort, tracking speed and pushing power. The machine is reliable and robust with a fast cycle time which in turn increases productivity. It is an ideal equipment to use in restricted spaces.

The JCB220LC Xtra comes with gross power of 170 HP and a bucket capacity range of 0.8 cu. m to 1.2 cu. m. Also, it is 8 per cent more fuel efficient. With 8 Power Modes and Smart Controls - this machine is 7 per cent more productive in H+ mode. It comes with LiveLink (which allows for instantaneous monitoring of JCB machines through IoT technology) and Air Conditioning as standard.

To further strengthen its position in the Excavator segment, we have introduced an all new 38T Tracked Excavator with two variants – the JCB 380LC Xtra and the JCB 380LC Quarry Master (QM). This is JCB India’s largest Made in India Excavator. The JCB380LCQM offers 16 per cent ‘Higher Lifting Capacity’ owing to a combination of high hydraulic power and high operating weight. It also provides 6 per cent more output while handling blocks. The JCB Dieselmax engine offers 3 per cent high fuel efficiency and generates high torque at low speed to suit the job needs. The JCB 380LC Xtra comes with a powerful engine. Its hydraulic performance gives the power to do more than expected. The wide range of heavy duty buckets can be used as per different applications and strata to maximise output which is available from 1.4 to 2.3 cu. m Power boost feature increases hydraulic system pressure to provide higher digging force and increased lifting capacity when needed.

Tell us about the cutting edge technology featured in your machines.

JCB introduced Telematics in the Construction Equipment sector. The Intelli-Control introduced in the JCB140LC Xtra, the JCB205 Xtra and the JCB215 Xtra Excavators, is integrated with LiveLink, our advanced Telematics Technology, which enables predictive maintenance, location and monitoring to achieve high uptime of the equipment. This is an Industry first feature, enabling transmission of the monitored values to a server for analytics and report generation. Our Intelli range of Excavators tells you the amount of work done by the machine at the site while you are miles away from the location. This is something that we have been providing to our customers enabling them to keep a tap on the machines irrespective of their location. Further, the Intelli-Control Excavators come with new features such as a 7 inch Colour Camera ready LCD screen, Dial Type Throttle, Three power modes – Eco, Power and Power+ and One Touch Auto Idle. It also gives information on the amount of fuel in the tank and along with upcoming Service reminders.

Tell us about your aftermarket services as a strategic differentiator.

We have around 700 outlets across India and added to it is our team of over 6000 service engineers spread across the country. Telematics is applicable to our service engineers. Our dealers have command centres at their sites. Through this, the dealers can know about the problem and accordingly steps can be taken to solve the issue. With LiveLink, the largest connected Construction Equipment platform in country, we have built a slew of customer focused offerings. Few such initiatives include LiveLink mobile app, giving JCB machine owners complete visibility of machine parameters & performance. Through our mobile applications such as Smart Serve and the JCB Genuine Parts Mobile application, we are revolutionising the way our Dealers, Customers, and JCB communicate in real time, thus aiming for higher equipment uptime through world-class product support. The JCB genuine parts application, an online parts ordering platform, was extremely well received with within the first few months of its launch. Further, internal tool for service requirements, service engineers and service jobs, Smart Serve has evolved as an ecosystem that acts as a backbone of JCB’s industry leading customer support network.

Which sectors are major demand drivers for your Excavators?

Infrastructure creation has gained massive momentum in the past few years. While Roads and Highways have been the lead growth drivers followed by Irrigation, we are hopeful that pipeline water projects together with water conservation projects will drive further growth in the industry. Moreover, the announcement and execution of large-scale infra projects such as Sagarmala and Bharatmala along with a continued focus on building rural infrastructure have energised the ECE industry. We feel this momentum will continue as the development of infrastructure is an ongoing process and the progress of the nation is dependent on this.

The recent announced thrust on building new airports with a focused approach on the existing opportunities in Power and importantly, rural infrastructure will give the much required boost to the sector. Further, visionary programmes such as ‘Nal se Jal tak’ will further create opportunities deep inside semi-urban and rural India. Regional road and air connectivity projects, Coastal Economic Zones, which are aimed at port-led industrial development, and the modernisation of Railways, are poised to further give impetus to the Construction Equipment Industry. In all, the vision of achieving the $5 trillion mark for Indian economy is a mission. There are a lot of things that will push infra to be the key of projects.

Your future outlook from the industry perspective and company?

JCB is fully supportive of the upcoming fuel emission norms. We are committed to environment as it is a matter of public health. Also, JCB is an embodiment of the Government’s ‘Make in India’ programme. For close to four decades, JCB has remained committed to India and has contributed to building world-class infrastructure. It has launched innovative, India-centric products and has expanded by way of new factories with Customer Focus and One Global Quality being at the core of its operations.

JCB is also creating employment and entrepreneurship amongst youth through its 15 Operator Training Centres in India. Many of the centres are accredited to the Infrastructure Equipment Skill Council (IESC), some of which are also linked to Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY). Over 25,000 people have been trained in these centres. The company will continue to focus on Government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ projects in a sustained manner. Today, we are moving towards a connected world. With internet, we are getting to interact with the machines. The whole idea of India @75 is to have a more digitally enabled environment. We would want to continue to invest in digitalising machines, IoT and the future technology. Earlier, it used to be about machines. Now, it is about the technology that drives the machines.
