Interaction- Farrokh N Cooper, CMD, COOPER Corporation

We are the leaders in harnessing technology

A leading engine manufacturer in India, Cooper Corporation offers an entire range of engines and power gensets developed through in-house research and strategic alliances with international brands like Ricardo, UK. Their engines and gensets have diverse applications ranging from automotives, marine, defense, construction equipment, and agriculture. In an exclusive interview to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES, FARROKH N. COOPER, CMD, COOPER CORPORATION discusses their product range and market prospects.

Briefly give us an overview of the Generator & Engine industry, the latest technology trends, and the current business drivers?

The DG set industry uses engines made by multinationals as well as homegrown players like Cooper engines. The industry has evolved through the years with India having regulations for emissions and sound level comparable with North America / Europe. The last mile connectivity issues in the public power grid & growing need for on-site power generation are the major growth drivers.

What are the types of Generators & Engines offered by your firm?  Cutting-edge technology featured in your products?  What distinguishes your products from competitors?

We offer gensets in the power band of 5 kVA to 500 kVA, soon to be scaled up to 1010 kVA. These are built with the engines manufactured by us at Satara, India with both diesel and natural gas fuel options. What makes us stand apart is the fact that our engines incorporate contemporary technology, specifically designed for heavy duty industrial / power gen applications as against the truck / tractor engine derivatives that are rampant in India. This makes our engines ideal for meeting the requirements of robustness, low sound levels, longer running period between overhauls, less maintenance andvery low operating costs.

Please provide details on your emphasis on technology, research, design and innovation?  What is your focus on technological upgradation in respect of your products? What are the advancements your have introduced or plan to introduce?

We, at Cooper, are known for being ahead of the curve when it comes to harnessing technology. We introduced the Common Rail technology a decade ago. We also offer the latest in emission controls.

To what extent is consumer behavior influenced by cost?

It is our experience that the customer pays the price commensurate with the value he sees.

Give us an understanding of the post sale services offered by your company?

This is a vital link in delivering value to the user to increase equipment availability and productivity. Our nation-wide, after-market network is well positioned to address customer needs.

Which are the areas which will drive your business and tell us about the important projects where your products have been installed with success?

The growing infrastructure projects in the country, last mile challenges in the power grid, ecofriendly fuel options like gas, low footprint and compactness, and the need of the customer for value-for-money power solutions are the key drivers. We are the preferred partners in the BFSI segment and several infrastructure projects.

How do you expect the market to shape up for the Generators & Engines industry, 2019 onwards, with the BS VI emission norms expected by 2020?

The new emission norms for Gensets are expected by 2021. While they may pose challenges to many, we at Cooper are confident about meeting these norms ahead of time.

Future outlook on the industry from your company’s perspective?

The industry has been growing in step with the broader economy. With our GDP growth seen at over 7% in the medium term and with the rising need for infrastructural development, we expect our business to grow rapidly.
