With the principles of ‘Serving, Improving and Creating Values’ which it has inherited from its German parent, Putzmeister Concrete Machines Pvt Ltd has established a very strong footprint in the Indian construction equipment market for concrete machinery and boom pumps.  In an exclusive interview with CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES, WILFRIED THEISSEN, MANAGING DIRECTOR, PUTZMEISTER INDIA, spoke about the trends in the RMC sector, the company’s offerings and outlook for the RMC equipment market in India.

What is the present growth trend witnessed in the RMC sector?

With Government impetus on infrastructure and affordable housing, RMC equipment manufacturers are witnessing strong growth in demand and we expect this trend to continue in the coming year.

What is extent of indigenization in your products? Do you practice ‘Make in India, Sell Globally.’

All Putzmeister products combine the best of German technology to the needs of our local customers. That said our Batching Plants are a perfect example of ‘Make in India, Sell Globally’. We manufacture BPs here in India and offer them not only to our customers in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Maldives, but also to customers in the Middle East, Africa, and SE Asia.

Green environment friendly technology in your products.

Since many years our R&D department has the protection of the environment in their focus. That’s how we developed efficient cooling systems to dramatically reduce the hydraulic oil needed for operating our pumps, work together with engine manufacturer to reduce emission norms, fuel consumption and noise, developed software and hardware to run our machines more efficient to inclined belt conveyors with hoods for cleaner aggregate movement.

Major demands made by end-users of your equipment. Is there a shift from initial cost price to TCO in Buyer Decisions?

At Putzmeister we have regular feedback systems in place to understand the emerging needs of our customers. In terms of buying decisions, some customers focus on the initial cost price and some take into account the total cost of ownership. We design our products to ensure lower operating costs for the customer in the long run.

Aftermarket services offered by your company.

Putzmeister is not just an equipment manufacturer. Our relationship with the customer does not end with the sale of an equipment. We offer a range of service solutions from preventive maintenance to emergency calls. Putzmeister has a network of 150 service engineers and technicians and 20 genuine spare parts branches to offer round the clock service to our customers. We also back this up with a higher ratio of service engineers and technicians per customer.

We train equipment operators and site managers to help run the equipment efficiently and safely. More recently we have also started offering operations and maintenance services – Putzmeister will embed a team on your site to help run your equipment and carry out regular maintenance as required.

Do you offer lease/rentals of your equipment?

We usually help arrange lease/rental deals for our customers.

Are you tied up with any equipment financing companies to help potential buyers with equipment purchases?

We have tie ups with all the major financers and banks and can offer our customers advice and support in getting their machines and equipment financed at the best possible rates.

What kind of government policy will foster growth of the RMC equipment sector?

Adoption of mechanization and a shortage of skilled manpower is by far the biggest challenge for the construction equipment manufacturers and its customers. The weakness of the Rupee, combined with high interest rates and difficulties to get the equipment financed is the second major challenge. The third is the extremely stretched financial situation of many construction companies in the market. At a policy level the Government can definitely help alleviate the first two challenges. Like every other industry negatively impacted by the weak Rupee, we hope by the time this interview is published the Government will have taken appropriate measures!

Your outlook for the RMC equipment market in India. Which sectors will be major demand drivers?

We believe infrastructure and affordable housing developments will continue to drive demand for equipment in this segment.
