Haulotte India Pvt. Ltd. Is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Haulotte Group (France), and is one of the largest ‘full range manufacturer’ of Aerial Work Platforms (AWP), in the world. In an exclusive interview SOUMA RAY, DIRECTOR, HAULOTTE INDIA PVT LTD, discusses their product line in India and the Cutting edge technology featured in his company’s products to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES.

Your assessment of the Access Equipment market in India, What is the volume and value of the access equipment market in India. What are the cost/quality equations, sector challenges, and growth prospects.

As compared to rest of the developed countries where the access industry is matured and using Access equipment is a very standard practice, India is still in its initial fledgling stage. The awareness is still growing and it will take a few more years for the industry to mature. The rough estimated size of the Access Industry would be around 7500 machines in the country. The major cause of worry is the unbridled imports of very old and out of serviceable life machines. Such machines are not even considered fit to be used in developed countries yet they are being used unabated in India because these machines are offered at very low rates. We strongly feel that there should be a restriction in age of such equipment that can be imported which shall benefit the access industry and also the end users who use such machines.

Cutting edge technology featured in your products What are the USP’s of your products Vis-à-vis competition

All major manufacturers of AWP’s are constantly striving to update the technology in their machines not only to keep up with the changing needs of the customers but also to make the machines more user friendly and efficient and ensure optimum level of safety while in operation. At Haulotte, we always hear the voice of our customers and their needs and hence are continuously innovating in terms of our R&D in introduction of newer and more user friendly technology and also working to expand our product line. We are already revamping our older models which have stood the test of time with newer technologies.

Our R&D team is working relentlessly to incorporate the best safety features in our machines so as to make them safe as well as give optimum performance to the user’s needs. One of the recent technological advancements we have introduced in our diesel boom lifts is the Entrapment Prevention System, ACTIV' Shield© Bar. This is a secondary guarding system that ensures safety of the worker in an entrapment situation. The system once activated allows on reverse and down function of the machine thus preventing further danger to the worker. The system unlike some of our competitors offerings can be reset from the platform itself, thus saving both time and money.

Each of our models and variant have their own USP, but one of the many distinguishing notable features is in the lower ground control Box of our new generation articulating & telescopic booms. We have incorporated the Haulotte Diagnostic screen in the panel which will enable the user to get all details of performance and related parameter at the touch of a button. Further, any fault diagnosis can also be done on this screen, which gives a pictorial description of the nature and location of the fault. This tremendously helps in reducing the downtime of the machine and any intervention can be done in the shortest possible time. Apart from this, our newest introduction is the provision of LED lights integrated on our new HT28RTJ 28m meter Telescopic Boom is to facilitate safe loading operations of the machine at night. Furthermore, our emphasis will also be to ensure increased availability of the equipment, enabling the users to get higher rental rates and productivity.

What are the trends driving purchase or hire of access equipment in India? To what extent is consumer behavior influenced by cost?

Requirements of Aerial Work Platforms are defined by height and application of use. Based on these parameters the suitable variant is chosen and offered. Hence at Haulotte we strongly believe in doing the application study for our customers so that the best suitable machine can be suggested to them. There are various machine s that the available for each variant and based on the customers need the same are offered.

Haulotte is one of the few full range manufacturers of AWPs in the world. We at Haulotte always listen to the voice of our customers and constantly innovate our products to make them more user-friendly and in line with the latest technology. That is the reason that instead of continuing to manufacturing machines with old technology which is common amongst competition, to be different and more proactive to the needs of our customers, we have been engaged in incorporating newer, state-of-the-art technology in our machines to make them more dependable and user-friendly. These new generation of machines are technically and operationally much ahead in comparison to our closest renowned competitors.

The decision to buy or to rent solely depends upon the need of an AWP and the duration it is required for. For a short term its always more economical to rent but when the project or the usage pattern of the equipment is for a long term or there is a constant demand of such an equipment it is always better to buy an AWP.

How do you expect the market to shape up for access equipment through 2018 onwards?

2018 has started very promisingly for us at Haulotte. We successfully finalized a contract for supply of 52 Nos. of Electrical Scissors & Boom lifts to a relatively young and rapidly growing rental company Rentease International LLP which has been formed in partnership of Meghraj Singh Rana, Ex Regional Manager (Manlift India) and Vipul Tulsian, Proprietor, Excel Work Equipment. The deliveries of the machines have already commenced and these are being deployed across various jobsites in the country. This is a beginning of a new association between both our organizations. Further there are many new AWP Rental companies coming up even located in Tier II/III cities, who have started purchasing new machines. We have been successful with such companies too.

It is encouraging trend that AWP Rental companies have started investing in New machines and I am sure this shall pick up going forward. Further with the increase in awareness of Access Equipment its popularity is increasing in the End User Segment who continue be the principal purchaser of new machines.

Future outlook for the access equipment industry and from a company perspective?

On a global perspective the demand of AWP’s has certainly increased both in Government and Private sector. Rental sector is also seeing good demands of our equipments which is an encouraging sign. But going forward as the AWP industry matures in India and people become more aware about the multifarious advantages of using such an equipment, the AWP industry shall start seeing a steady growth.

In the coming years this industry shall evolve to become one of the fastest developing sector.

Tell us of the important projects where your products have been installed with success?
Access equipment are broadly classified into “People Lifting Equipment”- Push Around, Scissor lifts, Vertical Mast and Boom Lifts (Articulated & Telescopic) and “Material Lifting Equipment”- Telehandlers. The usage of access equipment is universal and not specific to any particular sector. Wherever there is need to work safely at heights, access equipments is required. Be it Hotels, Malls, Hospitals, Warehouses, Manufacturing Industry, Facility Management, Construction, Mining, all across access equipment are required.
Our Haulotte machines are working satisfactorily in both the End user and Rental segment. To name a few of our prestigious customers would be Powergrid, NTPC, Punjab State Transmission, ABG Shipyard, Naval Dockyard, Mazgaon Docks, Mumbai International Airport, Airport Authority of India, Bangalore Metro, IOCL and a host of others MNC & Private Customers.
With the focus today being on the Infrastructure sector we foresee a substantial demand of such equipment in this sector and with the Indian Economy getting stronger day by day we forsee similar rise in demand of AWP’s in other sectors too.
Last but not the least, we expect that the Government would also formulate legislation related to safety for working at heights and this will be one of the most important factors which will spurt the growth of the AWP Industry in India.
