Interaction - Amarnath Ramachandran (MD) & Atul Taunk (Chairman), ARX Mining & Construction EQPT,

At ARX, Innovation is a way of life

Arx designs and manufactures a diverse portfolio of construction, mining and cargo handling products. Under the Arx brand, the portfolio includes a complete range of Motor Graders, Blasthole drill rigs and Dust suppression systems. The Indital branded products include Forklifts, Empty container handlers, Loaded and Empty Reach stackers, Aircraft towing trucks and Pick and carry cranes. Arx is also an authorized service agent for the HIAB range of products in India. AMARNATH RAMACHANDRAN, MD & ATUL TAUNK, CHAIRMAN, ARX MINING & CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT PVT LTD in a joint interaction to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES, speak about their new launches at Excon, emphasis on technology, design and innovation and a lot more.

Detail us on your new launches at Excon

Amarnath Ramachandran (AR): We have 4 new product launches at Excon, 2 graders, Arx G1000 Motor Grader (120 hp, 11 Tonne) which takes care of the small road segment, shoulders of big highways and village roads and Arx G3200 Motor Grader (310 hp, 32 Tonne) which is for very heavy earth work projects and  haul road maintenance in coal mines. This capacity is the 2nd largest in the world and only Caterpillar has a model bigger than this. These machines are fitted with all the state of the art electronics, latest technologies like telematics, geo location, it also has performance monitoring as there are transmitters fitted in all the circuits. Apart from , we will have the break -by -wire system which is a radar fitted in the machine which can detect obstacles up to a range of 80 meters in reverse and 12 meters in forward. So, what happens is if the operator doesn’t notice someone crossing, the radar system intervenes and the give out a alarm while also proportionately start breaking to avoid any collisions. The next step would be to make the steering automatic by using a combination of lasers and radars. That’s where the machines will reach in 3 to 5 years from now. We are working with a couple of companies on that front.

Our 3rd machine is the Arx S1200 dust suppression system, this is machine which is truck mounted and can be used to suppress dust in mines, cities, ports etc. The S1200 that sprays atomised water (mist) to a distance of 120 m has been designed to achieve dust suppression with optimum use of water.

Our 4th machine is the Arx G3300 Blasthole drill: (6-8”): Self-propelled heavy duty 6-8” crawler mounted Blast hole drilling rig which is capable of drilling 6 – 8” direct rotary / DTH. This machine is fitted with a Volvo D5 / Cummins QSB 6.7 engine, 173 BHP and has a heavy-duty box type derrick. It combines the best features of a piling rig (with slew arrangement) and is capable of drilling three holes in a single location. Since the traction speed is twice that of conventional drills the productivity is very high. This machine on display is fitted with an Atlas Copco XRH 1100 / 300 screw compressor and a 3-rod Lazy Susan type Carousel Rod changer. The machine has a fork chuck, break out wrench, water injection pump, dust collector, variable fan drive system, micro feed system with holdback, and a drill efficiency indicator.

Detail us on your company’s emphasis on design, research and development

(AR): All our machines are designed inhouse, we have already applied for design registration and patent. We have a very competent engineering team and are working on multiple projects. We contract out the lower end of the work and our inhouse team works on the higher end like component selection, analysis etc.

Enlighten us on your tie up with Kalmar

(AR): Just before the pandemic started Kalmar wanted to exit their manufacturing facility in Bengaluru as it was not viable and they asked us if we could take over their production, design and manufacturing from them and they would only do the sales and service part. Kalmar is Euro 3.3 billion group. We also have a tie up with one of their group company called HIAB, which is into load mobility solutions like truck mounted cranes, truck mounted forklifts etc. We have already taken over their government related business operations as there is lot of potential to sell these machines to DRDO.

Talk us thru your journey till date

Atul Taunk (AT): For the last 25 years I have been fabricating for other OEM’s. 3 years ago Amarnath and me joined hands to set up Arx. For a year we couldn’t do much due to the pandemic and supply chain disruptions. Otherwise we would have launched our machines much earlier. Amarnath and me complement each other well, he himself is a very good designer and I have very good experience in making structures. When we formed Arx, our goal was not only to develop products for India but also beyond. Our focus will always be to develop products for the international level. We are positioning our products at the premium bracket and the machines are designed accordingly.

Give us an understanding of the post-sale services offered by your company?

(AT): Post sales service has always been one of the most critical areas in ensuring repeat orders. The sales team usually lands the first order, and after, that it is Product support which retains the customer, or not. In India, the challenge used to be the complexity in moving parts through a myriad of problems with different documents from state to state etc. This is much easier now under the uniform GST rates. Good product support is easier if the machine is easily serviceable, parts are stocked at key sites and skilled personnel are available at short notice. Initially for the Arx range of products, we will be selling and servicing directly. Later we will add suitable partners in the network for sales and service.

Which are the areas which will drive your business

(AT): We will be selling ARX products in the Construction and Mining segments, the INDITAL range of products in Marine cargo handling and material handling – the service and sales activities for this range is carried out by Kalmar (Cargotec Group). The Hiab range of products will be sold to Government agencies (primarily the Army and the Airforce) directly by Arx.

How has been your experience at Excon

(AR): Excon for us has been very fruitful. Our machines have generated lot of interest and we have sold Indital products over the course of 5 days.

Excon has been growing year on year  and even with the incessant rains this time the enthusiasm and atmosphere was vibrant and bustling with high energy.
