In an exclusive interview to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES, JASMEET SINGH, AVP - CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS & CORPORATE RELATIONS, JCB INDIA LIMITED speaks about his companies world-class Mini Excavators, after market services, demand drivers and a lot more.

Give us an overview of the Mini Excavators industry in India, the latest trends and market dynamics.

With Government’s impetus towards infrastructure development for ‘New India’, a large variety of projects are being executed across the country. Some of these projects are around space-constricted urban/semi-urban areas. This is where Mini Excavators find great utility. The compact design of the machine makes it useful in areas like power, irrigation, and housing, and help redefine the nation’s landscape. The concept of ‘Mini Excavators’ is gradually gaining momentum with more customers now seeing the value in the machine, especially in applications that require compact products.

Mini Excavators are a niche segment and are used for different applications such as Urban Development projects, Municipal waste collection etc.

Tell us about the range of Mini Excavators offered by you, in terms of types, capacities and applications

JCB India, being one of the leading Construction Equipment manufacturers in India, has a comprehensive range in the 3T to 6T category of excavators with models - 30 plus, 50z, 51R and 55z. Offering high fuel efficiency, these machines also excel in providing operator comfort.

These models have a wide range of attachments like soil drill, rock breaker, etc., depending on the work purpose. Features like Zero Tail Swing and King Post design offer JCB Mini Excavators a unique advantage of performing efficiently in confined spaces.

The mini excavators exhibit a seamless blend of technology and digital innovation in terms of design, performance, efficiency and safety, thereby bringing to light JCB India’s effort towards meeting the ever-rising demand for world-class construction machines used for building a new India.

Mini Excavators by JCB India also offer additional world-class features like the unique boom offset that enables the machine to carry out trenching in a straight line along a wall. This provides the perfect visibility of the work area to the operator.

Power-packed with the best design and latest technologies, JCB’s Mini Excavators are certainly becoming the equipment of choice for a multitude of customers today.

Cutting edge technology featured in your machines. What distinguishes your equipment from competitors? Factors such as safety, operator comfort, ease of operations are crucial. What are the steps undertaken by you for providing the same?

Some salient features across our range of Excavators are– enhanced fuel efficiency, variable performance capacity, and smart machine management through LiveLink – an advanced telematics technology that benefits operators in better fleet management through remote monitoring. \The technology enables transmission of information on the machine’s health including Service, Operations and Security, to the operator or owner.

Aftermarket services as a strategic differentiator.

After Sales Support is one of the key deciding factors in the overall buying cycle of a product. Since our machines work in far-flung areas of the country, well-connected product support must be offered to customers to minimise the downtime and maximise productivity. With a network of over 60 dealers and over 700 outlets across India, JCB India has ensured to provide an unmatched distribution network to its customers.

Our dealers have made significant investments in setting up their product support network with over 6,000 trained professionals who are periodically trained on the operation and maintenance of the product. We have also strategically set up five warehouses at Pune, Bangalore, Faridabad, Guwahati, and Kolkata to support these outlets with parts supplies.

Another noteworthy addition in JCB’s product support is the introduction of JCB LiveLink, an advanced Telematics Technology for remote fleet management. To monitor these machines in real-time, we have set up a world-class command centre at our Ballabgarh facility. Our dealerships have also set up similar command centres to ensure that real-time support is provided to the customers to plan for service schedules and engage with users and customers for preventive maintenance.

Moreover, users can now control their entire fleet in real-time and all the critical machine information is available on their smart devices in the form of digital applications such as JCB LiveLink app, JCB Smart Serve App and Smart Machine Diagnostics app. Additionally, we have initiated various customer connect programmes and service campaigns wherein our trained service engineers visit the customer site across India and offer Service and Parts support. We have also introduced the Premier Line product support programme which gives the options of bespoke support packages for customers.

Which sectors are major demand drivers for your products?

The rural economy will be the key demand driver for the next many years. As rural further integrates, we are hopeful of seeing more action in terms of building infrastructure in this sector. The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna is one such program. Also, with a focus on water, Har Ghar Jal and Conservation projects, lakes and reservoirs are further expected to boost demand.

Given the investments earmarked by the Government for the Roads and Highways sector, we foresee a considerable growth potential in the Road Compaction segment. There is a requirement for building a world-class road network in India, especially in rural parts of the country. This presents a significant opportunity for compaction equipment.

With large-scale infrastructure projects such as Sagarmala, Bharatmala and Jal Marg Vikas in the pipeline, the long-term prospects look positive and we are hopeful of seeing a strong growth trajectory in this sector in the next few years.

Additionally, regional road and air connectivity projects, Coastal Economic Zones, which are aimed at port-led industrial development, are poised to give further impetus to the Construction Equipment Industry.

What is your outlook for the rentals market?

With better availability of financial schemes, renting road equipment/machinery is expected to increase at a faster pace, especially in tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

JCB India has been encouraging rental companies to include varied products in the fleet enabling them to offer complete solutions to their customers. As the concept takes off and becomes more acceptable, there will be more rental companies willing to invest. However, at present, the rental market is still localised and large rental companies are very few in number.

JCB, today, is a full range equipment partner and can supply products that are used in a variety of applications.

The future outlook from the industry perspective and company?

Industry Outlook: With the implementation of large-scale projects, including projects of national importance, the road equipment industry is on a path to gain momentum. A significant financial outlay announced by the Government in the recent union budgets has been driving demand for road equipment and will continue to effectively boost demand in the construction equipment industry.

Industry Growth Drivers: Roads & Highways will continue to be key growth drivers for the Construction Equipment Industry and critical to fulfilling the $5 trillion economy dream of India. The rising focus of the Government towards rural economy will also be one of the major contributors in the foreseeable future, with rural roads development projects being in the forefront. Urban rejuvenation is another area that can significantly create demand if focused on as an opportunity by the Government. Apart from these Railways and Water Conservation have the potential to become significant growth drivers for the Construction Equipment Industry.
