Tell us about the new products launched by Leeboy at EXCON 2017.

We are excited to unveil our largest graders to date, and CRDI versions of theolder graders and excavator at EXCON 2017. Our intent is very clearly to offer customers best-in-class products with quick service to maximize productivity and uptime. We have launched three new products:

• 990 Motor Grader (18t, 250 hp),
• 995 Motor Grader (24t, 280 hp)
• 525 Crawler Excavator (24.2 t, 169 & 170hp)

The 990 and 995 motor graders are highperformance machines suitable for jobsites demanding higher productivity and faster completion. Powered by a Cummins QSL 8.9 Electronic CAN-Controlled Engine (Tier III). The latest machines are also suitable for mining, and very popular in the Middle East and African markets. These models offer customers the benefit of higher productivity rates and lowering fleet size.

Tell us about the transition of your machines to BS IV.

In preparation for the upcoming Tier IV changeover in 2022, LeeBoy is also launching CRDI versions of the graders and excavators. The 525 has a CRDI variant fitted with a Cummins QSB 6.7 170 bhp @ 2000 rpm and a new high-visibility cab.

What distinguishes your products vis-àvis competitors?

Apart from products, LeeBoy also shares technology upgrades and service offerings that will enable customers to reduce the overall cost of ownership. Our machines are packed with Smart features which include: Electronic CAN controlled engine; Electronic fault diagnostic systems for the whole machine; New intelligent fan drive controller with integrated speed sensor; Electronic proportional control hydraulics; Power distribution modules; Built in safety algorithms in the transmission controller to prevent misuse and damage; Display of transmission fault codes and important parameters on the main electronic display in the cabin; Vastly Improved ergonomics and aesthetics with an imported cabin fully manufactured in Italy with all round higher visibility; Radar based audio-visual, anticollision system; Automatic cross slope and grade control system; and Laser controls. LeeBoy  excavators have buckets that are 25 per cent bigger than the machines in their class, and our aggregates are the best-inclass. We look at ourselves as a specialized house that manufactures niche products. We will go on to produce even higher class machines.

Our machines also have multiple safety features like hydraulic brakes, functional power steering even after the engine is switched-off, emergency shut-down switch, and fire suppression system, all of which have always been mandatory for LeeBoy machines. Soon these features will be stipulated as per the new Department of Heavy Industries’ specifications.

Is India a Buyers’ Market,’ how are you meeting client challenges in the Cost/Quality equation?

This is definitely a Buyers’ Market, and our focus is on giving ‘more for less.’ Once our large graders come in, we will be working on showing higher productivity rates and the advantages of lowering fleet size with less maintenance and staff. The intent is to ensure that the customer gets value for his money. Our 18 and 22 ton motor graders may cost a bit higher, but they offer triple the productivity, lowering the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) in the long run.  These machines reduce the need for staff by 33 per cent and the contractor will need fewer numbers of machines to operate in the first place.

We meet customer challenges in the product development stage itself. By Listening to his feedback and requirements, by using the Knowledge thus gained, and developing Expertise, to build Best-in Class products. Our tagline is ‘BUILT BY, LISTENING, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERTISE.’ In short we offer, ‘Unmatched Power, Performance, and Productivity.

Tell us about your India strategy. What is your current market share?

Despite being a late entrant we have been garnering more market share over the years. We sold 21 graders in 2013, 47 the next year, and 109 in 2015, and we clocked 160 units in 2016-17. In fact, LeeBoy India has completed a successful run till date andare poised to break-even by next year. Also, we are running a unique marketing strategy – to provide skilled operators along with the machines that were sold. So our practice of ‘picking up an operator, training him, ensuring his accountability and productivity, and also providing a backup operator, continues till date.

Our marketing strategy has been to focus on the performance of our products and to keep constantly improving them. We are working hard on pruning the overall cost of ownership. With Cummins, we are working on extended engine warranty, and larger service intervals. The market outlook for India is always bright due to our infrastructure deficit. Implementation has been our nemesis. But we are getting there as the pace of projects has picked up over the last couple of years.

As an Exhibitor, did EXCON 2017 meet your expectations?

EXCON is the perfect platform to showcase our wide range of products and acquaint customers with the LeeBoy team, technology upgrades, our service offerings and dealer network. EXCON continues to be South Asia’s premiere exhibition for construction equipment. With the advances in communication and media, we got more footfalls from contractors. Our customers, both existing and prospective, visited us to discuss improvements and client issues and they saw fist-hand the advances made in our latest products.
