What are the USP of your products vis-à-vis competitors.

thyssenkrupp invests heavily in R&D and we have successfully launched energy efficient elevators and escalators which complements the green rating of a building. We use latest technology in our products to make them more environment friendly. While, the latest products come with green technology, we are looking at installed elevators to upgrade them partially or completely with latest technology and components. In terms of control and automation, we have our latest products using DSC and TWIN which can have two cars running independently in the same shaft.



Your outlook for the Indian market. Which segments will be the biggest demand drivers for your products?

Indian mobility solutions market is registering steady growth. There is a growing demand for high-speed, high-capacity, elevators that can carry many passengers at once, safely and comfortably, particularly in high-rise office buildings, commercial complexes, and other large-scale facilities.

Having said that, India’s urban population is projected at about 600 million in 2030. We currently have 53 cities with  one million population, and it is set to increase to 68 cities by 2030. Further, India is expected to have 25 Mega Cities with a population of over 8 million and four Mega Regions, each with a population of over 15 million by 2025.  Rapid urbanisation shall drive the demand for elevators and escalator in the mega cities, regions and corridors.



Importance of aftermarket services in the Indian E&E market.

Elevators and escalators are the nerve center of all buildings, so their safe and reliable operation is essential. ‘thyssenkrupp TEAMService’ offers most comprehensive approach to keep people moving safely and reliably, by smarter, more systematic and stress-free maintenance service to customers.  We have digitised our aftersales service business, with each of our technicians being connected to the office by smart tablets that enable them to service machines with greater efficiency, better response time, and thus have minimum MTBF (mean time before failure). Using smart tablets, our technicians can access routes, manuals, technical data banks, and experts’ advice from remote locations to offer a superior service experience. We have also rolled out a practice of “predictive maintenance, whereby critical parts are directly replaced from the units on attaining its life period, irrespective of its malfunctioning or functioning properly”. In this context we offer a special service to major projects wherein the customer has direct access to the health status of their equipments on our website portal.

thyssenkrupp is transforming the global elevator industry, improving existing products, and delivering game-changing solutions, to make urban mobility more efficient, comfortable, and sustainable. thyssenkrupp has pioneered a significant advancement in elevator technology by introducing:

• TWIN: A precisely efficient elevator system, the TWIN® elevator system has two cars, arranged on top of each other, that operate independently in one hoistway.

TWIN is extremely cost-efficient. Labor and material expenses are drastically reduced since elevators share a single hoistway, landing doors, and guide rails. For a small amount of additional effort on installation, TWIN pays dividends for years to come for any building over 164 feet in height. Using TWIN means your building handles higher capacities with less space. By reducing the number of shafts necessary, less construction is needed and additional floor space can be reserved for maximizing leasable space. Whether used in new buildings or as part of a modernisation project, TWIN can transport up to forty percent more passengers. All TWIN elevator systems can be equipped with an energy recovery function that can feed about 30 per cent of the energy generated by braking back into the building’s power grid.


• MAX: We are ushering in the digital age by integrating machine learning IoT technology to deliver a breakthrough service solution. MAX is the result of an extensive two-year R&D process conducted by our maintenance engineers and field specialists in partnership with Microsoft data scientists and software programmers.

MAX analyses real-time data from elevators around the world and provides our maintenance control hub with a vast level of detail. This allows us to assess the health of connected elevators and their components. The result is a fundamental shift from reactive to proactive maintenance and the many benefits that go along with it. MAX delivers maximum uptime, all the time.


• ACCEL: The unique transportation system offers high capacities and high speeds for short distances, with no waiting times for passengers and low implementation costs. Passengers step onto the ACCEL at normal walking speeds, accelerate smoothly up to 7.2 km/h, or even 12 km/h for passengers who continue walking on the pallet band, and then decelerate to normal speed when leaving the system. ACCEL generates time savings of 70 per cent.


• MULTI: Introducing the elevator industry’s Holy Grail and end of the 160-year reign of the rope-dependent elevator. Our groundbreaking rope-free elevator system is set to revolutionise tall building construction. It harnesses power of linear motor technology to move multiple cars in a single shaft, both vertically and horizontally!

Multiple cabins travel safely up one shaft and down another in a single continuous loop, much like a circular train system on a vertical plane. The only visible difference to passengers – and it’s a welcome one – is that the doors open every 15 to 30 seconds, despite having fewer shafts compared to standard elevator systems.

MULTI consolidates multiple carriages into fewer shafts. It reduces the elevators’ footprint by up to 50 per cent while increasing passenger throughput by at least as much. MULTI may also help reduce the building’s overall size, external surface area, and total energy consumption.

We have integrated advances in lightweight design, including new lightweight carbon composites, to reduce MULTI’s cabin and door weight by up to 50 per cent. Eliminating the ropes and counterweights of conventional elevators also decreases the mass of the elevator system.



Tell us about your manufacturing base in India. What is the level of indigenisation.
thyssenkrupp has recently inaugurated its Multi-Purpose Facility (MPF) in Chakan Industrial Area- Pune, Maharashtra, which comprises manufacturing, distribution center, and training facilities. Representing an investment of Rs.3 billion rupees (€44 million), the new 20,000 sq.m. industrial facility has an initial capacity of manufacturing 6,000 elevator units, extendable to over 10,000 units in foreseeable future.

Having established a 95 per cent manufacturing localisation target, the opening of our Pune factory will  enable the company to significantly expand in the region and support the increasing growth of the Indian construction sector, driven by strong urbanisation.


Your market outlook for the elevators & escalators industry and for your company

We can see a clear upward trend in Tier II, Tier III, and Tier IV cities, and our objective is to harness this growth to achieve a double digit growth for ourselves.  We expect the market for E&E to expand from 55,000 units in 2017 to 57,570 in 2018.
