Interaction - Suraj LaL, Head Projects, Eastern Cargo Carriers (I) Pvt Ltd

Our products directly help in Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

This is a company with a very rare and innovative focus on providing Green construction products made from recycled FMCG packaging waste. In value terms – the synergy between waste management and recycling on the one hand, and generating value from waste on the other hand – is unmatched. In an exclusive interview to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES, SURAJ LAL, HEAD PROJECTS, EASTERN CARGO CARRIERS (I) PVT. LTD., talks about their diversification into eco-friendly construction materials and their POLYAL brand product line.

How are you practicing your company motto – ‘Innovation & Creativity.’

It is always been a practice that we look for a new concept which is not only a marketable product but also helps to save the environment. POLYAL products are made from used beverage cartons (UBC). A UBC contains 75 per cent paper, 20 per cent plastic, + 5 per cent aluminum, in layered form. Basically UBC is not a bio-degradable product, and normally it ends in landfills and damages the environment. The paper is first removed from UBC and then we make roof sheets and flat boards from the leftover composite materials. This is the only manufacturing unit in India.

What prompted your company to diversify into manufacturing construction materials.

Eastern Cargo Carriers (I) Pvt. Ltd.(ECCIPL), is in the freight forwarding line since last 35 years and having a worldwide network. We believe in responsible industry leadership, creating profitable growth in harmony with environmental sustainability and good corporate citizenship. As the Government of India started “Make in India” campaign, this is the right time to capitalize our strength in logistics and global presence, so ECCIPL thought of diversifying into manufacturing and found a product which preserves the environment and supports CSR activities through its products.

Tell us about your tie-up with TETRA PAK India Pvt. Ltd.

When we conceptualized this product, what immediately came into our mind was about TETRA PAK, the biggest aseptic packaging company in the world. It was a joyful moment for us when we approached Tetra Pak, India, and found that they have a separate division called ‘Environment Division,’ it signifies the concern they have for environment. We met Pravin Mallick, Environment Director- South Asia Market, TETRA PAK, and he encouraged us to put up a recycling unit. Tetra Pak has built an infrastructure to collect used beverage cartons. Once they are collected through NGOs, waste collectors and aggregators, the goods are brought to us to recycle fully. We are the Official Recycling Partner of TETRA PAK in India.

What are the USPs of your products, vis-à-vis competitors.

Roofing industry has the tremendous opportunity in India and is growing day by day as the government has started a movement called “Home for Everyone.” As compared to similar products available in the market, POLYAL roof sheets and flat boards have the biggest advantage that it can reduce inside temperature by 5-7 degree celsius. It is non-corrosive, non- breakable, waterproof, rust proof, termite proof, borer proof, reduces sound decibels level inside and are fire retardant. To add further, it can be “Recycled Again.”

Provide us details regards to the Green and recyclable virtues of your products.

Our aim is to provide best environmental products in the market. By best, we mean having the lowest environmental impact of production. In fact many countries classified the products as “environmentally advantageous” based on comparative scientific studies.

Our products are green products made from UBC’s, a majority of which would otherwise end up in a landfill in India, and they are not bio-degradable by nature. By recycling UBC’s we firstly save trees by providing a paper source and make products from leftover POLYAL, which would have otherwise kept increasing the size of our landfills.

Tell us about your product portfolio and its various applications.

We make roof sheets and flat boards. Looking at the consumption pattern of Indian market we developed corrugated roof sheets which can be used on houses, warehouses, factories, temporary shelters, etc. The flat boards are a multipurpose product used for centering and shuttering, commercial panels, any partition, toilets, ceilings, cabinets, packaging, school benches etc.

In what way are your products participating in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Our products directly help in the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Firstly we offer commercial value to UBC’s so it creates incentives for various types of waste collectors, especially rag pickers, to collect waste and keep our cities clean. Further we made toilets under the Abhiyan from POLYAL products and they are installed in villages in Goa.

Certifications obtained for your products from third party testing labs.

We have tested all our products with the National Test House (Western Region), Govt. of India, Ministry of Consumer Affair, Food & Public Distribution, Department of Consumer Affairs, and have received the certifications from them.

What new products do you plan to develop for the construction sector.

Development is a continuous process so we are trying new products out of waste and scrap.

Your future roadmap for the company.

As the concept and awareness of recycled products grow the market exponentially, ECCIPL is all set to increase the production capacity to become the market leader in India and abroad for recycled product.

What is your outlook for the Indian market.

Our products perfectly fit the needs of the Indian consumer. The size of the Indian market for our segment is immense and constantly growing. We expect to fit in easily and provide the best solution in construction industry.
