Interview - Elaine Crewe (MMI South Africa)

bauma Conexpo Africa gives exhibitors a platform to connect with the emerging African market

Elaine Crewe, Chief Executive Officer, MMI South Africa  offered SHRIKANT RAO a view of the performance of the bauma Conexpo brand in its African edition

On the impact and performance of bauma as a global construction equipment fair brand in your country:

bauma Africa entered the African market with great success for its premiere event. The first edition of this International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines and Construction Vehicles took up 60,000 square meters of exhibition space, which made it the biggest industry event for the sector in Africa. Confirming the outstanding success of the show Lawrence Peters, Chairman of CONMESA (Construction and Mining Equipment Suppliers‘Association), said: “bauma Africa exceeded our expectations by far – we are extremely satisfied. This show is what we wanted, it is for the industry.“

On the conduct of the most recent Bauma event:

bauma Africa took place at Gallagher Convention Centre in 2013,  one of Africa’s largest exhibition and conference venues. Located in Midrand, between Pretoria and Johannesburg, Gallagher is conveniently positioned in the business hub of Gauteng. The newly established Gautrain and upgraded highways made this venue easily accessible to both local and international visitors. The venue offered five purpose-built ground floor exhibition venues offering approximately 25 000 square meters of indoor exhibition space. For the first time in its history Gallagher Convention Centre provided bauma Africa with 35 000 square meters of outdoor exhibition space, this area was used predominantly to house the hundreds of heavy duty machines brought in by exhibitors. The venue also provided 5 star facilities in terms of conferencing venues and catering for both exhibitors and visitors.

On the response the event(s) has received in terms of visitor turnout/exhibitor participation and business volumes generated:

14,700 registered trade visitors from more than 110 countries attended the premiere of bauma Africa. 84 percent of the visitors came from South Africa, 6 percent from other African countries and a further 10 percent from other continents. The top ten visitor countries were South Africa, Mozambique, Germany, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Italy, Namibia, United Kingdom and India – in that order. 754 exhibitors, 123 from South Africa and 631 that are headquartered abroad, from 38 countries attended bauma Africa. Besides South Africa, the top exhibitor countries were China, Germany, India, Italy, Korea, Spain, the UK and the US.

Future outlook for brand bauma Conexpo Africa:

As part of their cooperation on international construction machinery events, Messe München International and AEM announced at bauma in 2013 their intention to set up a joint venture in Africa. This joint venture will be organising the upcoming trade show as bauma Conexpo Africa. Due to the success of the premier event and the expected growth of bauma  Conexpo Africa, the trade fair in 2015 will take place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, South Africa’s largest purpose-built exhibition, convention and events venue and one of Johannesburg’s best known landmarks. The Johannesburg Expo Centre offers multipurpose exhibition halls, a large outdoor exhibition space and due to its convenient location with outstanding traffic accessibility it is perfectly tailored to meet the needs of both exhibitors and visitors. In the future bauma Conexpo Africa will strive to give its exhibitors a platform to meet, connect and expand with the emerging African market. It is an international quality trade fair for the exhibitors to grow their network in Africa.
