The company recently won the award for 2nd Best CSR in CE Sector at CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2016. WILFRIED THEISSEN, MD, PUTZMEISTER CONCRETE MACHINES PVT LTD offered PANJAMI VIVEK an insight into the company’s challenges, triumphs and future plans.

 

Could you give me your perspective of the Indian market?

Well, to mention the Indian market, I do not like to use the word ‘huge’, but it is a market with a huge potential. The expectation from the Indian market has been too high and driven by overenthusiasm instead of patience. The reason why the expectations could not be fulfilled is because of the structure of India. It is the largest democracy in the world but a very young democracy and the decision making is tough. It is not like China where decision making is immediately followed by execution. India will grow steadily but at a relatively slow pace. The CE market had known a downturn from 2012 to mid-2015. 2016 however looks promising with a rise of approximately 30 per cent + as compared to 2015 which brings us slowly back to where we were in 2011.

 

There is a lot infrastructural boom happening in India. Is Putzmeister playing an active role in contributing to it?

At the moment, infrastructural growth is mainly focused on roads. When there are concrete roads there are always a lot of concrete equipment as well as drainage ditches, channels, fly overs, bridges, and the likes. Together with our clients we have been heavily involved in this road building exercise.

 

India is the point of focus in the business world right now. Everyone is vying for their piece of cake. What would your strategy be to stay on top of your game?

Indeed, we do have a lot of competition and a lot has to do with the potential of the markets. Everyone wants their own piece. Then there are moments when there is no capacity. It is more a biased buyer’s market than a seller’s market. But like I mentioned earlier, we not only provide the best equipment based on fulfilment of our customer’s requirements but we also and most certainly, prominently prove our premium aftersales support, as well as applications and process solutions support. We are a full solution provider and allow our customers to fully concentrate on their targets.

 

How do you rate shows like Bauma?

I actually must say that I have mixed feelings. It is always very hard to evaluate the financial footfall. We know our expenses beforehand, but not the results.

The most important thing for us at PM is to welcome the customers, to show them new advanced technology to understand their requirements, their needs, to understand their problems and to propose our tailor made solutions.

This year’s edition expected general footfall of about 25,000 visitors is disappointing.

 

Have you launched any new products during Bauma?

We have extended our product portfolio to our Indian customers and are showcasing equipment from 2 other PM verticals, underground and mining as well as plastering and flooring for the real estate sector.

 

Could you tell us about the future plans for your company?

Next year, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of being in India in the current set up, we continue to believe in the Indian market and are continuously investing in our facility and customers we are here to last.

We are here to play a leading role in the industry and to participate humbly in the development of this great nation.

With an aim to create a better social, ecological and economical environment for the society’s next generation, Putzmeister showcases the true essence of executing Corporate Social Responsibility. Putzmeister India is sensitive to the needs of the people around, for it believes, “Businesses cannot be successful when the society around them fails.” To execute this CSR Vision, on creating a better social, ecological and economical environment for the people living around ‘Project Life’ came into force. The intention of support and CSR activity for Putzmeister is beyond giving financial support, and is based upon total honest involvement. Putzmeister was aware of the fact, that local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), who were already involved in time-tested projects, desperately needed a breath of Life and Hope from Corporate Houses. The search finally brought Putzmeister to Bethesda Life Centre, A NGO based in Goa, which is a registered Charitable Institution. Since its inception in November 2002, Bethesda Life Centre has been involved in charitable and social humanitarian activities. The NGO has three homes for children in distress, and children from abused backgrounds. Currently the Centre has 114 children in the age group of 3 to 17 years accommodated in three homes owned by the trust in Santa Cruz village, Tiswadi, Goa.

Putzmeister provides the children with food, nutrients, education, medical care, renovation of the orphanage including beds, mattresses. Each of these children is celebrated once in 3 months, where a joint Birthday party is organized by Putzmeister. Christmas is celebrated also in style with the 100 kids.
