We are fortunate to have a presence in every major construction project

In more than a decade and half of its existence, Ashtech has earned an outstanding reputation as a leading, processor, distributor and exporter of fly ash. The ISO 9001:2008 certified organisation has been a prominent player in the area of cement, ready mix concrete, solid and hollow concrete blocks, light weight blocks, pavers and tiles, gypsum plaster, aggregates, decorative concrete systems etc. CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES caught up with SANJAY MANDHANIA, Director, Ashtech (India) Pvt. Ltd. on the sidelines of a conference in Mumbai to learn about his company’s plans going forward.

Tell us about Ashtech’s presence in the ready mix concrete space?

As a development sector player we have been involved in all type of construction materials. We started with fly ash in 1997 in which we have achieved both forward and backward integration. We are currently able to do about 8000 tonne of fly ash every day plus 3000 tonne of pond ash every day. We manufacture cement for companies like ACC. We have 2 units of 1500 tonne per day capacity. We are doing ready mix concrete, blocks, bricks, pavers and tiles and aggregates. Let us just say we have successfully worked hard to have a presence in every major infrastructure or construction project being done in this country. As a manufacturer and distributor we have defined excellence through our products and processes and I am happy to say we are in demand mainly because we take particular care to understand what the client needs.

Where are your manufacturing plants located?

Ashtech has 8 RMC plants, 125 transit mixers and concrete pumps and an installed capacity of 540 cum per hour/5,00,000 cum per annum through which we deliver quality and innovative products to our customers. We are the largest captive RMC manufacturer in Pune right now. We have started our first commercial plant in Thane three months ago. We have aggregate plants at Pune and Bhivandi. We have nine units in the country – in the north, east west and south India, and we now have a presence in Orissa too where we have tied up with a 3600 mw thermal power plant project- one of the largest power station in india having a pan india distribution network.

Which are the important infrastructure/construction projects that Ashtech has been associated with?

Ashtech's fly ash has been used on some of the most prominent and landmark projects in the Middle East, one of them being Burj Khalifa the world's tallest tower. We have supplied fly ash to airport projects in Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar. We are also regularly supplying to Sri Lanka and Gulf countries. In India we have finished the Bandra Worli Sealink project; in the airports segment we have done Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai; in the Metro segment we have been associated with projects at Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai; we are involved with the monorail project here in Mumbai for the MMRDA. Ashtech has been fortunate to be a part of most important projects. Right now we are the only company in the country for distribution of  processed fly ash.

Tell us about your firm’s emphasis on green products?

Everyone knows that fly ash is the greenest product of the century and we are associated with it since a very long time – fly ash is the greenest product in our basket of offerings – serving the movement.

How is Ashtech looking to contribute to the government’s $1 trillion infrastructure development plan?

I believe the more players we have contributing to the country’s development the merrier it will be. On our part we will do all we can to contribute to the effort by modernising our equipment at our plants and raising capacities when required in order to keep up with the very high demand.
