Everest Engineering in India exclusively distributes FineHope , SYM flattop and electric luffing cranes which are equipped with electronic safety system, speed control, etc. Fine Hope tower cranes are available in 32-200 tons, whereas SYM luffing tower cranes in 8-32 tons. Other products distributed by Everest Engineering in India are passenger hoists and mast climbers.

“Backed with our extensive technical expertise in operations and maintenance of tower cranes, we are offering conversion support services for tower cranes. This is relatively a new support area in India,” says P.V. Ramdev, MD, Everest Engineering.

He explains, “Conversion comprises converting of existing tower cranes from being electrically driven, (with power sourced from captive diesel generating sets at the site) to Variable Frequency Support (VFS) driven. With VFD, the consumption of electricity comes down by 35 per cent. For a 6-8t tower crane, it will be from a 125KVA DG set to 62.5 kva, Which will save at least 3 litres of diesel per hour. If we calculate 20Hours working per day for 26 days a month, it will save 1560 Litres of Diesel which will be 18,720 Litres an Year. The cost of this diesel @Rs.50 will be amounting to Rs.9,36,000 per year and this amount is get burned by most of the construction companies with out their notice. The cost of conversion is close to Rs five lakhs, while it delivers saving of 9-10 lakhs on an average on diesel consumption.” every year. Everest has executed 30 projects for converting the tower cranes to VFS driven. Prominent conversion projects executed by Everest Engineering are converting of tower cranes for JMC projects working in varied real estate projects in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Bengaluru. The cranes converted to VFS driven were of various make.

Looking towards new business, Everest Engineering has also ventured into erection and dismantling services for tower cranes. “There is dearth of competent and qualified agencies for erection and dismantling of tower cranes in India. Further, many of OEMs as per feedback received from most of our customers, have very few engineers to provide erection and dismantling support for the tower cranes. In some cases, we have learnt that there is a single engineer to support a population of 20-25 units. Filling up the gap, we provide dedicated turnkey support services for erection and dismantling of the tower cranes,” mentions Ramdev.

Reliable control technology is extremely important for tower cranes and passenger hoists because of concerns such as great heights, accessibility to many areas of the construction site and project dependency. As far as tower cranes are concerned most of the buyers are aware of PLC & VFD controls and make specific demands for it.



PLC controls are excellent for accurate operation without any failure. PLC input/ output indicators are an additional benefit for easy and quick identification of faults whereas the VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) is mainly used for smooth start and stop functions as well as saving of about 35 per cent power consumption.

However there are two very important practical difficulties with VFD mechanisms.



If the VFD is used for hoisting mechanism, then a feedback encoder must be used to avoid free fall of load. Unfortunately many manufacturers are unaware of the requirement of a feedback encoder. Some time the hook falls freely resulting in fatal accidents. Very often due to various reasons like non availability of power from VFD – motor burning, open cable connection or cable cut – the hoist motor does not rotate, brake has open and the hanging load will fall freely without any chance to control it. But the encoder stops the free fall through closing the brake suddenly if the motor feedback not come to the VFD.

Similarly if the VFD is used for the slewing (rotating the tower crane) mechanism, then the rotation and control of tower crane will be very difficult during monsoon / heavy wind conditions. If the operator needs to rotate against this heavy wind, then VFD mechanism won’t be powerful enough to rotate the crane. This has led to suspension of tower crane operations during heavy wind conditions at many coastal site locations in places like Mumbai or Chennai. In such cases the use of Regulated Control Voltage/ Rotation Controlled by Voltage (RCV) mechanism is strongly recommended for slewing operation.

An RCV mechanism is very powerful during heavy winds as well as smooth start and stop operations. Also the operator is able to achieve better control.



As far as the Passenger Hoist is concerned the best control technology is the VFD mechanism. Since it handles people to vertical heights it is very important that a VFD control achieves a very smooth start/stop operation as well as saving of power up to 35 per cent.

Safety systems are a vital part of passenger hoists from the point of view of reliability and durability. If the site in charge – or even the machinery in charge — physically checks the functioning of safety switches in a passenger hoist, there is a chance that he will see some of the safety switches being bypassed and running in danger. This can happen due to pressures like project schedule, frequent failure of parts, improper knowledge of safety requirements etc. It is therefore recommended that a safety check is conducted along with the weekly scheduled maintenance. Most of the site management, operations and safety department people are not aware of the safety checks and replacement schedule of parts. While looking at the cost of the equipment, the purchaser should also be aware of the proven durability and reliability of the equipment along with details of parts and mechanisms used. It has been noticed that many passenger hoists run under heavy vibrations even with VFD controls. It must therefore be stated that the smooth running not only depends on VFD but also on the quality of rack, pinions, alignment and the accuracy of structural manufacturing.
