SATYEN PATEL, MANAGING DIRECTOR, SAHYADRI INDUSTRIES LTD (SIL) speaks to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES regarding the company’s role in making Pune a smart city.



Give us a brief background of your company, its products and solutions offered and the industries you cater to?

Sahyadri Industries Ltd (SIL) is a flagship company of the Patel Group based in Pune (Maharashtra, India). We are Popular for the Swastik brand of Fibre cement roofing sheets. SIL is an ISO 9001:2008 certified, SAP Enabled and BSE listed company and is a player in the building material space in India for over 6 decades now. SIL is a pioneer in making double width machines in the world along with templates required for the same. SIL is into manufacturing of Fibre Cement Roofing Sheets under the brand name Swastik, Mezzanine application boards under the brand name Cemply, Cellulose Fibre Cement Sheets under the brand name ECOPRO, Backyard Poultry Structures under the brand name Swastik Kukdookoo, and the revolutionary Cemply Swachalay in the toilet segment.SIL caters to Housing, Construction Industry, Poultries, Dairies, Warehousing, Sugar Industries, Railways etc across India.



Give us an understanding of the investments made and the company’s manufacturing capacities?

SIL has 5 Plants across Western and Southern India with a Production capacity of 50,000 MT of roofing materials and 8000 MT of cement boards every month. We have 12 Depots across India.



Tell us of your company’s performance in 2016 and growth prospects?

In the financial year 2015-16 our company’s worth was 400 Crore. The true mettle of an organisation is in the ability to respond and turn challenges into an advantage. We have always been alert to the changing dynamics of the building material industry and prompt in responding to it enabling us to manage the impact of challenges and emerge stronger. SIL has seeded several initiatives and projects that will bear fruit in the coming year. Our focus on continuous improvement and R&D helps us achieve great efficiency in our innovation. SIL was conferred the status of “Export House” in its foreign trade wing. It is the certificate of recognition given by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India. The company has achieved this status for accelerating growth in export and for creating a powerful and unique ‘Make in India’ brand, instantly recognized world over. Swachalay received the ‘Innovative Green Toilet Technology’ Award in 2015 in India Sanitation Summit organized by India CSR Group, held at PHD Chambers, New Delhi. SIL is committed to provide improved hygienic sanitation to deprived rural people, and girls in schools who do not have access to “Swachh Bharat".



Tell us about the company’s agenda for 2016-17? Can we expect any product additions this year? Please specify?

SIL’s strategy hinges on leveraging the long-term growth opportunity in Indian building material industry. India is forecast to witness multi-fold increase in housing and constructions as the working population and GDP per capita increases in the next ten years. The Company is therefore, consistently and strongly investing in products and technologies that would make it future ready and would also fuel international growth.

As a leader in innovations in the building material industry, SIL is developing a strong pipeline of products and solutions keeping in mind our customer’s changing preferences. SIL’s innovative Silbuild - fast-track housing solution for all and green environment friendly super fast construction is the answer to Housing for All: Govt’s initiative to build nearly 2.95 crore rural houses by 2022.

In Roofing sheets, the Company will continue to excite the market with new innovative products. Customer-centricity and excellence in quality, the two important pillars for securing sustained growth and success in future, will receive continuous emphasis from the Company.



The city was selected in the ‘fast-tracked category’ of the smart cities programme. Which are the areas the city requires immediate attention and improvement.

Puneites want a clean Pune with fast-track construction, innovative applications, green products, improved public facilities and improved public transport. SIL’s innovative green products for fast track building solutions will fit in the plan of making Pune as fast-tracked smart city and also to meet the demand of increasing housing and infrastructure requirements with the flooding of people from across India for employment and business. Under infrastructure, we need outer ring roads and flyovers at critical points for free flow of heavy vehicles traffic to reduce city heavy traffic congestion and accidents.



What are the attractive qualities of Pune which led to your company making investments in Pune.

Pune is a growing cosmopolitan city well connected by road, rail and port transportation with all corners of the country with freight advantage. The city offers a peaceful and supportive environment for Industries to grow. It has the added advantage of availability of abundant skilled man power and the real estate is growing at a good pace.



As a manufacturer, what are the business enablers you expect to be introduced by the government?

Better infrastructure facilities, uninterrupted power supply, water facilities, and industrial incentives to promote industries.



Future plans for your company.

As for future plans of SIL, Innovative product extension, green environment friendly products, and applications like infill walls, solid walls, dry-wall construction system, wall cladding, mezzanine applications, fast-track housing solutions, roof-underlay, super fast construction would top our priority list. The Government's focus on Housing for All by 2022, infrastructure investment, ease of doing business and "Make in India" initiative are efforts in the right direction for boosting investment in the country. Operationalising this vision into reality will be the key to future growth for SIL and the Indian building material industry as well. Government’s initiative of focus on rural economy will help in improving disposable income in rural India, and that will definitely have positive impact on our business of roofing and other building materials. We also intend to focus on increasing our overseas markets shares.

With continued R&D in new applications, the pipeline for the business remains strong for sustained growth in future. SIL is committed to become a 1000 Cr Company by the Year 2020.
