Interview - Marc Jarrault (Lapp India)

We expect the market to grow between 8-10% in the next 2-3 years

Lapp India is a 100 per cent subsidiary of the Lapp Group which manufactures Cables, Connectors, Cable Glands, Conduits and Accessories. The company has pioneered the concept of "Total solutions in Electrical Connectivity" in India thorough its vast range of products. MARC JARRAULT, MANAGING DIRECTOR, LAPP INDIA responded to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES queries on the role played by his company as a provider of Total Solutions in Electrical Connectivity

Give us an understanding of Lapp India as an organisation and tell us about your manufacturing facilities?

Lapp India started its India operations in 1996 with a manufacturing unit in Jigani, Bangalore. Today, our Bangalore manufacturing unit is the third largest manufacturing facility of the Lapp Group producing about 100,000 km of ÖLFLEX® connecting and control cables and insulated single cores each year.  In 2012, Lapp India set-up its second Indian manufacturing facility in Pilukhedi, Bhopal which is helping us strengthen our base in the single core wires segment as well as cater efficiently to growing customer demands in India. It has an existing capacity of 1,000 km of single core cables daily, catering mainly to the building segment. We have grown to over 250 employees in the company and are adding more to the Lapp family. Lapp India is the second largest company of the Lapp Group; the milestone set here in terms of business and the success garnered in retaining our position in the market acts as a benchmark to gauge our performance to a great extent. Our achievement in Lapp India sets an example for our companies located in other countries worldwide.

Tell us about your range of products and their special features?

Lapp has a vast range of around 40,000 products which includes glands and connectors so that it is not just about cables but everything around them too. Lapp India caters to manufacturing cables to address a variety of connectivity requirements for a number of verticals including – Machine Tools, Automation, Automotive, Public Sector, Buildings, Renewable Energy, Chemicals, Oil & Gas, Metals & mining, Textiles, Paper , Packaging, Plastics & Machinery, F&B, Cement & process, Utility & Power generation, HVAC, Material handling and Process.

How has 2013 been for the company from the performance standpoint?

Rupee depreciation had an important inflationary impact on the industry giving rise to increasing cost of imports of raw materials which subsequently imposed a pressure on productions costs and profitability. India's trade deficit narrowed to a two-and-a-half-year low in September, which is a significant reduction in the country's gaping current account deficit.  At Lapp India, we manufacture cables catering to all connectivity requirements for an expanse of verticals including – wind, solar, automation, automobile, building connectivity, machine tool, process, solar, and even public sector. Therefore, for Lapp India, the opportunity to grow always existed, as there has always been a continuous demand for cables irrespective of market conditions. An initiative that has helped us stay resilient through change is The Lapp Operating System (LOS), a global initiative of the Lapp Group. The LOS is an organisational concept to manufacture the best of products for our customers with complete involvement of all the employees by eliminating wastage; ensuring the highest quality and on-time delivery.

Are you looking to expand your product portfolio raise investments in expansion of your facilitiies in 2014-15?

Further, expanding our operations in India has been a key focus for us, mainly due to promising growth opportunities presented by the country.  With the promising steps announced by the budget to boost infrastructure and urbanisation, investment to develop metro rails, high prioritisation of renewable energy projects, we are closely observing diverse sectors on the basis of which we are developing or procuring products that can serve the needs of respective sectors.  Also we are increasing capacity to focus on verticals like renewable (solar and wind), Building Connectivity Solutions and instrumentation cables for process industries.

We aim to further strengthen our position in the control cables segment and penetrate deeper into the market. Our current focus is to establish the single core business for the building segment and control cabinet application. Lapp India intends to focus on creating a wide retail presence in the building segment. Hence we are associating with new retailers and distributors to achieve the milestone. Further to this, we are strengthening our customer care through our contact centres to capture customised requirements from our customers. To boost our high quality customer service we launched the Lapp Experience Centre which has on display our extensive range of products that Lapp India offers to cater to more than 20 different industry verticals. This provides customers an opportunity to touch and feel the entire product portfolio thus helping us to enhance our customer buying experience. Additionally, we are looking towards a thrust in terms of sales and also increasing our order inflow, which will continue our growth.  To ensure sales effectiveness, our focus has been on enhancing our supply chain management and logistics. Lapp India has been investing extensively on strengthening the dealer network to penetrate deeper into the market. We are also looking at expanding our reach across India. As tier-II and tier-III cities have been developing vigorously we have been witnessing good demand from these regions. Hence we are focusing our efforts on exploring the market potential in these regions by educating buyers about the significance of quality products as opposed to the low-priced sub-standard products.

Further to this we are strengthening our customer care through our contact centres to capture customised requirements from our customers. To win a competitive edge over the players in the field we believe in delivering unbeatable quality and our excellent logistics enables supplies to reach in the shortest time.

What is your outlook for 2014-15?

With the new government emphasising strongly on the need to revive manufacturing industry and infrastructure, we are definitely optimistic about the growth in 2014-2015.  With the significant measures taken in the Union Budget 2014, reduction in threshold limit for investment allowance, predictability in taxation policy, FDI in defence and insurance up to 49 per cent, permission of 100 per cent FDI in construction and reduction of threshold limit in built up area for FDI, introduction of E-business, high priority being given to creation of roads, waterways, new airports, metro rails, these factors will provide a positive impetus to the growth of the electrical equipments industry. The IEEMA Mission Plan
2012-2022 gives a good overview of the future of the industry. As stated by IEEMA there is immense scope for the Indian electrical products market to boost its exports. The global electricity equipments market stands at around $450 billion of which India’s share is barely $4 billion which is less than
1 per cent. As far as the cables industry is concerned, we can expect the market to grow between 8-10 per cent in the next 2-3 years.
