Interview - Bharath Anantha (Harsha Engineering)

We work diligently to innovate and develop new products

Harsha Engineering specialises in the manufacture of fabricated components for heavy engineering, mining and earth moving equipments like operator cabins, canopy, semi cabins, counter weights, fuel tanks, hydraulic tanks, sheet metal kits and revolving frame assemblies. The company also manufactures a range of special purpose machines (SPMs) and productivity improvement machines for agro sectors. BHARATH ANANTHA, MANAGING DIRECTOR, HARSHA ENGINEERING (BANGALORE) PVT LTD, responded to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES’ queries on India’s first micro excavator being designed by his company.

On the range of products manufactured by the company: Our main focus is manufacturing of light, medium and heavy fabrication assemblies for Mining, Agro and Earth Moving Sectors. We supply presently to OEM's like L&T-Komatsu, BEML, Cargotec, Terex India, etc. Our expertise are in the manufacturing of products like operator cabins, counter weights, fuel and hydraulic tanks, machined sub assemblies, LH & RH decks for mining machines, and sheet metal kits for earth moving machines.

On your production capabilities: Our manufacturing facility is located in Electronics City, Bengaluru and is spread over an area of 1.35 acres with a shop floor area of 25,000 sq ft. We have a flexible shop floor layout with all the machines and necessary infrastructure required to undertake light, medium and heavy fabrication jobs. We are working on Single Line Assembly for production items, wherein products flow from work station to another with value addition at every zone. This helps us to have better control over our quality and cycle times. We have a "World Class Manufacturing" environment to deliver the right process and good quality products to our customers.

On the prototyping services offered by the company: Our emphasis is on designing products by empathy with customers and have both in-house know how and the technical tie-ups. We have gone to the grass roots levels to work with the users to understand their requirements and translate those requirements into product development. We feel by this way, we will be able to deliver a product that is more useful to the market and this aspect differentiates our product from existing products.

On introducing India first micro excavator and its areas of application: The micro excavator terra – it is still in the state of design infancy – is mainly focused on small time farmers. This product which is towable finds its application in seasonal farming activities in farms, agricultural fields, horticultural applications, landscaping and tea and coffee estates. We can also use our product in light and medium digging, trenching and excavating operations. So this will be useful for the agro, construction, infrastructure, utility and maintenance sectors. The next version we are developing is a drive around version with almost the same form factor, but enhanced features.

On the market for the product across India and the prospects of a bC India launch: We are presently looking to completely develop the product. We foresee a good demand for such machines in the Indian market. Yes, we do look forward to launch it at a platform like bC India. Our main customers would be agriculturists, farmers, civil contractors, builders, land developers, utility and construction firms. We have worked diligently to innovate and develop new products during the recession phase. We feel the development of Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and mechanisation in the agro sector because of shortage of labour will spur consumption of our equipment. We are capable of scaling up our infrastructure as per requirement.
