Interview - Nitin Gokhale (Dynamic Crane Engineers Pvt. Ltd.)

We foresee business over the long term getting good

The Pune based Dynamic Crane Engineers Ltd is among the biggest players in the country’s construction equipment rental space. Its primary areas of business have been in the area of Crane Safety Systems, Manlift rentals, crane spares and training. NITIN GOKHALE, DIRECTOR – TECH, DYNAMIC CRANE ENGINEERS PVT LTD offered CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES a ringside view of the business

How has 2013 been for your company in terms of business?

The overall economic condition has been bad and the rental equipment business has been no different because of decline in investments and delayed projects.

Give us an understanding of your involvement with the cranes business?

We have been in this field since last fourteen years and have the experience of working with various types of German crane brands like Demag, Gottwald and Liebherr. My initial involvement with the industry was in terms of maintenance of the machines when I worked with a crane company, but later on I moved to heavy lift job planning, crane assembly and erection. Eventually in the year 2000 myself and Bharti Gokhale decided to venture on our own. Bharti had a long experience of marketing/ sales and administration. So together we started Dynamic Engineers with the objective of providing quality services to the mobile crane industry. We have been leaders in the areas of crane safety systems and have installed quality crane safety systems on all types of cranes. These include varieties like telescopic, lattice boom, portal cranes, dock side level luffing cranes, offshore cranes etc. The spread of our clients is pan India. We believe in the policy of making work safe and easy and are doing a lot to educate users in the merits of safe practices and systems. As a firm we are involved in the training of the training of users.  We are also the sole authorised distributor for Robway Australia since 2001 for the entire range of products related to crane safety. Thereafter in the year 2007 we got into the business of offering aerial platforms on rental. Today we are a prominent name when it comes to crane safety as well as Man Lift rentals. In a short span of time, we have established ourselves in providing solutions for aerial platform and Man Lift rentals

You are strong on the spare parts front?

Dynamic Cranes Engineers Ltd got into the area of supply of spare parts for cranes and manlifts around 2012. We sensed that there was a growing need to get into the space because a very large number of cranes in the country relied on imports and there was a huge problem acquiring spares for the maintenance of the cranes. The development of infrastructure over the last 15 years in the country has led to large numbers of used cranes and other construction equipment being brought into the country from abroad. Since these machines are technically very complex they require regular maintenance. And proper preventive maintenance needs proper spare parts. Our company is well placed in terms of spares because of our contacts with global crane manufacturers and dealers of OE parts. That allows us to source the required spare part at the right price for our customers. In several cases we have been able to recommend substitute parts for a cost effective solution. Our technical team is also involved in developing import substitutes for certain electric and electronic parts required for cranes and manlifts. Apart from the supply of spares we also offer repair services for critical spare parts like slew rings, hydraulic cylinders etc.

Tell us about the range of rental equipment that you offer?

Dynamic places great emphasis on safety and out of this stems our policy to have a young fleet of machines. We include young machines into the fleet every year. In the case of our Manlift division our fleet consists of Manlifts from renowned manufacturers like JLG, Genie, Manitou and Haulotte.

The working heights of the manlifts are from 20' to 145'.  These include varieties like self propelled rough terrain, truck mounted, towed, scissor lift, battery operated etc.

What is your current fleet size? Also tell us about the other solutions provided by your firm?

Dynamic’s total fleet size spread across India is currently about 120. Apart from crane safety systems, we also provide solutions for level sensing of cranes, ATB systems and wind speed indicators. The company has a dedicated team of engineers who are well versed with crane safety systems on various types of cranes country wide and as well as in offshore applications. We have a specialised maintenance team which offers services to the entire fleet of equipment working at various sites. The onsite team is further supported by back office staff and robust computer systems leading to greater efficiency. We try to ensure that we maintain stock of all critical spares in order to minimise breakdown times at site. The end result is that we are able to provide a cost effective solution to the spare parts needs of our clients. All our machines are operated by our own professionals who ensure that they give reliable and quality service to our clients. To support our product offerings we also have a section which provides critical services and annual maintenance contracts for crane safety systems, repair and maintenance of crane parts and complete overhaul of manlifts. Our workshop which is located in Pirangut in Pune is fully equipped to deal with every requirement. Further due to the growing requirements of the market we have been constantly adding machines to our rental fleet of manlifts and aerial platforms. Further to this we now are authorised dealers for PALFINGER truck mount cranes and GEHL skid steer loaders. PALFINGER is the market leader in its category worldwide and have cranes that can provide solutions to a vide variety of applications of material handling. Similarly GEHL is one of the oldest skid steer loader manufacturing company in the world and provides rugged machines that can handle any kind of challenges of the construction industry. Our sincere service backup has been a major factor for our selection for this dealerships.

Could you name some of your clients?

We have a lot of big people on our list of clients. To name a few: Reliance, L&T, Kirby, Mahindra, Cairn, Voltas, Volkswagen, Toyota, Tata Bluescope Steel, Voltas Ltd and ABG Shipyard and many more.

What according to you is the advantage Dynamic Crane Engineers offers to the end user?

We would say our client and quality centric approach to business keeps us ahead. This is reflected in our commitment to timely delivery. Our team takes care of logistics and ensures on-time transportation and delivery of the machines to the site under utmost care. It is also seen in our emphasis on the safety in the usage of our products. It can also be seen from the vast industry experience of our workforce and also our commitment to ethical values in the way we conduct business. It is an in depth knowledge of our industry which has stood us in good stead and helped us to earn the respect of a large number of clients across India.

What is your outlook for the business for 2014-2015?

We do not see anything special happening this year. The new government is in place and that has triggered a lot of hope across all the sectors in the industry. There is a lot happening across India, not just in the metros like Mumbai or Delhi or Bangalore but also in smaller towns and cities. Then there are also industrial corridors being planned which will lead to more infrastructure and growth of the real estate sector. We can see evidence of that in a city like Pune itself. Yes, speedy policy decisions by the government in  the matter of land acquisition and environmental clearances will lead to the projects getting on stream. That will give a big fillip to the rental equipment business. We foresee business over the long term getting good.
