Interview - Nitin Lall (Atlas Copco Construction Technique)

With a stable government we hope to see good developments

Atlas Copco Construction Technique strives to support its customers throughout the construction industry – demolition and recycling, site preparation and road construction – and across its broad product portfolio which includes compressed air, power generation, pumps, hand-held compaction and concrete equipment, and hydraulic attachments. Nitin Lall, General Manager, Atlas Copco Construction Technique responded to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES’ queries

On Atlas Copco’s performance through 2013-14: The Construction Equipment (CE) market has been seeing low demand and overall the activity is sluggish. Since we now have a stable government we should see some good developments in the 3rd and 4th quarter of this calendar year.

On new offerings in core product areas: Atlas Copco Construction Technique Business Area has added a slew of new products to its product portfolio. We have launched bucket crushers, two new portable compressors and Dynapac road construction equipment in the new visual identity. The newly launched  XAH236 compressor offers a capacity of 500 CFM and 175 PSI as against 450 CFM and 150 PSI being offered by other contemporary models from the last so many years. Another addition to the compressor portfolio is the XA187 which is an upgraded version of the XA176. This is the bestselling model in the Atlas Copco portable air compressor stable.  In terms of value addition, the XA187 is capable of running 4 jack hammers at the best fuel efficiency as compared to a maximum of 3 jack hammers currently being offered by competition, with an increase in capacity by 10 to 12 per cent. Atlas Copco India will be launching its Generator Range in the country shortly. Atlas Copco Road Construction Equipment has decided to align the visual identity of the Dynapac range of rollers and pavers in line with other products from the Atlas Copco Construction Technique basket. The initiative is well likely to strengthen our brand identity in the Indian road construction sector. Finally, with the launch of Bucket Crushers, we have now become a one stop solution to modern demolition requirements.

On current capacities and investments at your manufacturing units: In 2013, Atlas Copco invested in a Greenfield state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Chakan, Pune. This investment is with an eye to the future growth envisaged in the country. The plant is three times the size of our old facility at Dapodi, Pune and therefore will be quite sufficient to meet our immediate as well as future demands, both locally and for some overseas markets.

On the new Chakan plant: The newly built state-of-the-art facility at Chakan has the capacity to produce one portable compressor every 15 minutes. The same plant will be utilised in the future for our indigenisation projects for generators, light towers and pumps. The manufacturing plant at Chakan uses lean manufacturing technique. This ensures priority to simple, small and continuous improvement which leads to a higher level of efficiency.

On plans and prospects in 2014-15: Atlas Copco Construction Technique is a growing business area in the Atlas Copco India group. We hope to grow by approximately 10 per cent in this calendar year and we expect a better growth in 2015 and onwards through continuous product innovations, new product launches and delighting customers through value additions and stronger partnerships.
