Interview - Sunny Surlaker (MC Bauchemie (India) Pvt. Ltd.)

We cater to the quality conscious segment of the market and not the price sensitive segment

MC-Bauchemie is one of the leading independent manufacturers of building chemical products in Europe. Its largest plant is situated in Bottrop, Germany, and is home to management, production, and R&D. Its subsidiaries and sister companies with their own production sites are located across Europe and overseas. SUNNY SURLAKER, HEAD- ADMIXTURES DIVISION, MC BAUCHEMIE (INDIA) PVT LTD provides an insight into the international company’s latest offerings for the Indian market.

Tell us about your product range—brief description of different products you manufacture for various applications—and their sales in the current fiscal?

MC-Bauchemie (I) Pvt Ltd is a leading name in the Construction Chemicals  domain for over 25 years in India. We manufacture over 200 construction chemicals in technical and financial collaboration with MC-Bauchemie, Germany. We are an ISO 9001:2008 certified company, having pan-India presence through technically trained and qualified channel partners and IRP (Germany) trained applicators. We provide solutions for a wide variety of issues cropping up in the construction segment. For example, we provide a full range of admixtures and additives for improving properties of concrete during placement, for workability time, slump retention, retardation, etc. Then there are additives that make concrete more durable, more impermeable, better finishes, etc. Following this, we have special curing compounds to ensure the concrete does not crack, heals micro-cracks in concrete and does not cause loss of bond for overlays to the concrete. We have specialty-coating and waterproofing systems that ensure waterproofing as well as special applications such as protection of concrete in sewage treatments plants, where pH levels are extremely low. We now have material systems that can take care of concrete in exposure levels where pH is from 0 to 14. There are special injection systems and special polymer modified mortars to address water ingress as well as repair applications to increase the longevity of both newer constructions as well as heritage structures. Also there are specially formulated breathable, crack bridging, UV resistant, anti-carbonation protection systems that help improve life of repairs, but also are used to extend the life of new structures. These materials provide a cover factor to the reinforcement in excess of 50 cm of standard M30 Concrete. This kind of protective quotient helps to improve the service life of new structures dramatically.

Tell us about the effect of the recent economic slowdown and what are the strategies adopted by you to tide over the crisis?

Our products have long been popular and accepted readily into the market based on the quality of our executed works. As always, we cater to the quality conscious segment of the market and not the price sensitive segment because we never let ourselves forget the brand has a worldwide reputation to keep. Our focus was and will always be Technical. With this approach, our customers keep coming back to us, which has shielded us from the slowdown.

Tell us about your manufacturing facilities, their geographies, production capacities, investments and expansion plans if any?

These products are manufactured in our well-equipped plants in Gujarat and Goa under technical and financial collaboration with MC-Bauchemie, Germany utilising their state-of-the-art technology and quality assurance systems. We are also an accredited ISO 9001:2008 company, which helps us maintain quality across the products and services. As with production capacities, it is adequate enough to meet demands in the coming years. Our Goa plant is currently undergoing expansion and is supported by a state-of-the-art-training centre and laboratory for better interaction with our customers.

What are the new products you have launched?

We have contributed several innovative technologies like dense packing concretes based on Quantz Technology and very low pore volume thick coatings for drinking water and waste water industry based on Dynamic Sync Crystallization to name a few. These developments in various forms are inclined toward providing better waterproofing systems. Our latest launches include updated versions of integral waterproofing additives incorporating Dynamic SynCrystallization (DySC®) and provision of multi-faceted support in concrete technology for best benefit to our customers. We are working toward launching various new applications with our concrete additives, such as low permeability concretes, waterproof concretes, etc. to help our  customers achieve more with less.

MC-Bauchemie Worldwide has pioneered many innovations such as liquid applied bituminous membranes (Nafuflex Series), Flexible Crack Bridging Elastomeric coatings that can be applied in contact   with standing water (MC-APC), etc. For the future, we believe in innovation and our latest systems for waterproofing of underground structures include a new generation breathable ‘Green Coating’ that would revolutionise underground waterproofing treatments. We offer our clients technical innovation, technical support and flawless execution by trained/qualified applicators. To highlight the features of the product, MC-Special DM provides integral-waterproofing properties to concrete by combining three characteristics into one specially designed product. These innovative characteristics are:

Reduction of Capillary Pores: Special additives in MC-Special DM make the concrete more workable. This property helps concrete achieve excellent compactability thereby reducing compaction and capillary pores. Reduced porosity means, less transport of water through the cement matrix, giving concrete a line of defense against water ingress.

MC’s Revolutionary DySC® Technology: MC-Special DM uses advanced microfine hydraulic and pozzolanic nanoparticles to effect a structure of densest packing in the cement matrix. The cement matrix is subsequently densified by a complex process called Dynamic SynCrystallization® (DySC).

The strength and permeability of a cement-based material is based on the hydration of the clinker components, to form C-S-H gel and Ca(OH)2. Our special nano-particles use this Ca(OH)2, in presence of water, to recrystallize and form new more stable C-S-H phases. One gram of this crystallizing nano-pozzolan can react with more than 1000gm of Ca(OH)2 in concrete, which means its reactivity is much higher than most pozzolans. Therefore the most porous part of the cementitious matrix, (Ca(OH)2), is converted to stable C-S-H type crystals. Over time this process continues and the structure of the matrix becomes more refined, overall porosity decreases, micro-cracks are sealed and pore volume is minimised. This DySC process thus makes concrete watertight.

Hydrophobic Pore Blocking: In addition to the mechanisms above, MC-Special DM has special additives, which converts the water-absorbing capillary forces into water repellent capillary forces due to the hydrophobic effect of the constituent. It is specially formulated and designed to prevent the passage of water through capillaries of the concrete, making it further impermeable.

Tell us about the geographies where your products are marketed and briefly describe your business strategy to penetrate deeper into the Indian markets?

We have a pan India presence through technically trained and qualified Channel Partners and IRP (Germany) trained applicators. In today’s fast changing world of technology, ‘innovation’ is the key in staying ahead and fuelling growth of any organization. We follow the same trend. MC-Bauchemie’s motto for years has been – Innovation, Competence and Service. These three principles would be the cornerstone of our activities for the future and will propel our growth to the next level. As a construction chemical manufacturer, we are going back to our basic competency of formulating better and more improved product systems. Material improvements coupled with our modern outlook on our activities is the core of our focus in the coming few years. To address this challenge, MC-Bauchemie’s approach is to solve problems and supply systems through free technical assistance. We do a lot of training for engineers as well as our clients, which build effective technical partnerships for long-lasting solutions. We continuously go in for innovations and new developments. I believe in a future where we interact with our clients, not solely as a supplier, but also as a technical service partner. We plan to achieve this and expand the awareness about our industry by means of our training centre, production sites and laboratory in Goa for maximum positive interaction with our customers.

What are your plans for the current fiscal?

Our unique marketing strategy has kept us insulated us from the recent market slowdown and we are looking forward to close this financial year with good growth and are positive about the trend  continuing in the coming years. Looking at market factors, we believe with the advent of our Construction Chemicals Manufacturer’s Association (CCMA), our industry is  pushing forward the drive for awareness on ‘Correct Usage of Construction Chemicals’. Once this wave catches on, it would be a big boost in driving the growth of our industry and our company forward.
